Re: Why move to Switzerland?

I can't really see that you would have a better standard of living here than in other European countries. Switzerland is quite a unique place however in a positive and negative way. It can offer a lot if you are open to new experiences.

Re: Why move to Switzerland?

Taxes? Well it depends... While working in Czech republic as self-employed IT freelancer, i paid cca 1 (in word: one) % of my gross income to taxes. Social stuff was also cheap, together (taxes, social & health) I paid not more than 10% of what employer gave away for my work. Everything legal, confirmed by responsible authorities that all sums match.
Of course compared to CH the amount I am left with (netto salary minus all basic expenses) is cca doubled, so it's up to me to spend it all in vain (parties, activities) or spare (mountains, activities with little bit different approach).
Depends on Your lifestyle... this is THE country for natural beauty, system that works (on many levels), safety etc... and Zurich is quite cosmopolitan (and more or less also other big cities). People - are also very polite, if You don't approach them in some rednecky arrogant style, but languages are (as always) very important.
When I sum it up for myself - probably the best place on earth for me for next few years. To reach my top in professional aspects, mountaineering etc. And after this experience, maybe lay back @ my home country, work less, have more time for my future family... who knows?

But seriously, if the only reason you would consider moving is for money ... don't move to CH. There are so many additional costs (food, rent, insurance, "stealth taxes") that you'd end up regretting it. Personally, I think it's sad that someone would consider a move from an already comfortable situation purely on financial grounds, but each to their own, I guess.
Dead right !

I love living in Switzerland. The more I travel the more I think Switzerland is a very comfortable place.

Of course, we pay a lot of taxes but it is the price to pay to live comfortably, in my opinion.

I would really like to live and work in the US for example. I really love this country. I would make much less money than now but for a period of time that would be OK and it would be a very good experience with lots of memories. Not only money matters ! I would not mind being rich as hell but...

Make the right choice, which is the best for you !

With the exception of Ticino, the lake Geneva region and probably Basel the climate in CH is fairly horrible.
Fixed that for you.

I'm currently back in Australia, on holiday. So far it's been pangless. I expect it to continue that way.

Re: Why move to Switzerland?

What a pointless discussion. Why are people coming here? Because they get a good job offer. If you do have a good job in Berlin, you can of course have a good live there. There really will not be a lot of a difference in standard of living between 75k EUR in Germany or 120k CHF in Switzerland (except that your CHFs are pretty awesome when you go on vacation). The reason many come here is not the mountains, but the low unemployment/high chance of finding a job. Plus: Yes, if you are high educated and you have five years of experience, it levels out perfectly. But if you do not, I can tell you that a graduate salary for an engineer of some 35k EUR in Germany is significantly lower than the 80-90k you can get in Switzerland relatively easily...

@economisto: You find Heidelberg crap? I would definitely prefer it over easily 95% of the UK these days... and I do not think it it the nicest part of Germany.

I was just tired of men constantly asking me out and hitting on me, so I decided after reading EF that Switzerland was my place for some peace.

Classic. And so true. This German guy was hitting on me on New Year's and it was the weirdest feeling because it took me a while to realise that, yes, he's hitting on me. Sadly he was smarmy, East German (sorry guys, the dialect just kills it for me) and had a ponytail, so the attention was unwanted but it was an interesting experience.

Ok, back on topic.

Re: Why move to Switzerland?

If you are looking for a reason here, it means you are not totally convinced...

Like many have said, life in Switzerland is good if you have a good salary. Beautiful mountains nearby and various hiking and skiing or other outdoor possibility. Public transportation is great but you are also paying for it. As a family you will most likely use a car anyway. Childcare is expensive and most of the time there is a long queue for a spot. But education is good.

Having lived in Zurich for almost three years, we are moving to Munich and are really looking forward to it. When we came here we had no friends or relatives. It was an interesting experience for us, and we certainly enjoyed what the country had to offer. However, we also realized that it is not the place for us in the long run because of the language and political atmosphere and perhaps the mentatily. I think to fully intergrate you will need to speak, in addition to high German, the local dialect, and have swiss friends, which is not an easy task.

This is a small country and not everyone is pleased about all influx of foreigners. Switzerland is changing too fast and too much for some. As a foreigner you might not feel all that welcome or feel like you are a burden of this society, although you are doing no harm and paying your tax. However, you will surely meet friendly people on a personal level.

Foreigners have become the scapegoat for many problems in this country, which is probably the inevitably consequence when there is too many of them, no matter in which country. It is just so much easier to blame them.

Rant: What really annoys me is the "if-you-don't-like-it-you-can-leave-nobody-is-stopping-you" attitude. Sometimes it appears that only positive comments about CH are welcome and not others. But I guess there are people like this everywhere...

Re: Why move to Switzerland?

Most people come to Switzerland to witness the mullet in its natural habitat; to experience the thrill of watching a car being driven with millimetre precision at 120kmh - from your own rear bumper; to complain about public transport that can be upto 7 minutes late as often as twice a year; to complain that their gross/net salary is not enough and they can't afford anything and they have to buy everything from the impoverished countries across the border; to marvel at the superior eyesight of the typical Swiss real estate agent - and their ability to ignore faults when you move in, and spot them when you leave; and, most important of all, to witness the Swiss in their natural habitat - their staring, their sneering their perverse adherence to rules and their superiority.

One or two come for the mountains, the skiing, the sledging, the hiking, the efficient public transport, the cleanliness and the general quality of life.

But don't worry, after a few days on EF, we'll have beaten that out of them.
