Mobile phone when visiting UK

Can anyone help - I am a bit of a novice, but I have been told i can buy a prepay sim in UK for an "Old UK mobile phone" when I visit UK to make UK calls. Does the SIM come with a phone number or what do I do - sorry of this is addressed else where but cannot find anything. Thank you in advance

Re: Mobile phone when visiting UK

I don't know about buying a Sim for an old phone, but I bought a new PAYG phone from Tesco supermarket for £15 which included £10 of calls. I keep it for when I'm travelling round there, just topping up each time I go. Saves a fortune on roaming charges from my Swiss handy.

You either buy a pre-paid phone with included SIm and talk time, or just a pre-pay SIM and put it into an existing unlocked phone that you already have. http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=1...ccc688c869882c

Re: Mobile phone when visiting UK

I do the same as GG and have a Swiss phone & UK PAYG. The only thing you must do (I was told) is just use it every few weeks (just dial a no and ring off)as if it is not registering as being used, you can lose your number or find it may not work.

Re: Mobile phone when visiting UK

so presumably this means that cannot use old phone as the number on that one no longer has an account ( cancelled it a a contract phone 3 years ago) - shame as it is quite a nice phone! What does a locked phone mean?
Guess I just go with a supermarket prepaid phone!
Thanks for your replies

Does that phone use the Tesco Mobile network?

Re: Mobile phone when visiting UK

You can easily get a pre-paid SIM card from many shops on the British high street, SIM cards are usually free of charge. They also have offers for pre-paid data.

You need to make a call every 90 days, or your SIM will be de-activated.

If your phone is still locked to a Swiss network, it would be better to ask about compatibilty before you "buy" a SIM card.

i have an old uk phone and a tesco pay as you go sim card. the number comes with the sim card not the phone so as long as the sim card is on the same network (if not unlocked which enables you to use any provider sim card)then you should not have a problem

Re: Mobile phone when visiting UK

Thanks for your help.
One thing. How do I tell if my Swiss mobile is locked or not?
I've got a cheap Motorola mobile from Migros (which I only use for receiving SMS's from my bank to log in).

PS As far as phones go I'm about as knowledgeable as a dinosaur.

Normally when you buy a prepaid phone together with a SIM from one of the main networks, they come as a package and the SIM is locked for 12 or sometimes 24ths.

However, at the moment, Conforama are offering 2 phones from Polaroid (of all people) for 40 (basic) or 50 (better spec.) chufs., with are not SIM locked (but don't come with a SIM) and are dual SIM; i.e. place for 2 SIMS in the same phone.

I put in my Coop Mobile (Orange) prepaid SIM from my old phone (everyone that matters has that no.) and bought a new one from Aldi (Sunrise) for 20 chufs with 20 chufs worth of free calls at min 14 rp p.min. and 10 chufs p. mth. for 300MB internet.

Obviously, with place for 2 SIMs you can have a Swiss and UK SIM in the same phone.

Re: Mobile phone when visiting UK

I bought a Nokia dual sim phone in the UK
( Dual SIM phones: are they here yet? )

it came with a UK charger but was not a problem once I returned as I had adapters. At Digitec, it retails now for CHF55 or thereabouts.
( Edit: It is now CHF39 delivered without any contracts from Digitec )

Whilst in the UK, I got hold of a cheap ( free if ordered online ) SIM from Lebara UK sent to my hostel. GBP2 free credit lasted a very long time when calling to Australia, CH and other countries.

For local voice calls, I picked up a 3 SIM which replaced my Sunrise SIM on this newly acquired phone ( I had turned off roaming anyway ).

For data, I bought a 1GB prepaid data 1 month validity SIM from 3 via Amazon UK delivered to my hostel, worked very well on my USB stick on trains and smaller towns.

a 'cheap Motorola mobile from Migros' will doubtless be locked.
that's how they make money - by giving you a cheap (or free) phone, and hope that you will recharge it enough for them to recoup the cost of the phone.
