That picture is of Count Basie is lovely. I'm glad you save it.

If you look online "count basie" autographed photo you get anywhere from $19 to $375.....

This page says they do appraisals too.
Sweet, thanks for the link. You should see Ella's picture, she looks truly gorgeous...I will try to upload them tomorrow.

Re: Question about autographed pictures

Somewhere in the distant past I heard or read that these were photographs that were distributed to close members of a theatre group where the star was performing. Are you sure they are signed originals and not simply photograph reproductions?

They look like real signatures (pen strokes) to me....and some are dedicated to Kurt (the guy who owned them)...but I cannot be certain, that's why I would like to get them appraised to see whether they are real.

Re: Question about autographed pictures

Alright, I managed to put some on picasa (just 8 out of the eleven...I need better lighting for the other 3).

Re: Question about autographed pictures

"To Kurt, Louis Armstrong" would seem like a 'real' signature to me.
I have to say though, if you sell them wouldn't the money go to his estate?

...well, that was a while back...and his successor retired. They just cleaned up his office the other day.

I agree. I don't think they are your property to sell. The fact that they were 'rescued' or that he had them at the office, or that the company didn't clear out his office at the time doesn't pass the ownership to anyone other then the beneficiaries in his will.

IMHO the correct and 'decent' thing to do would be to give them to whom they rightfully belong. They might then either say, "it's OK you can have them", or maybe reward you in some other way.

Surely the company has his relatives details etc. likely in HR department re pension etc. Maybe any other personal things in his office (e.g. pictures? etc) might be of value to his relatives, even if not of monetary value. They should also be returned rather than dumped. And if it was so long ago and your company never cleared up his possessions, a big apology should also accompany them.

I would say that this is highly debatable and disagree that it's the rightful thing to do. Either way, I never showed intend of selling them but simply sought advice on how to get them appraised and verified for authenticity.

Not even sure his family knows about these as they were kept in his desk at work...

Exactly. The company really should have long ago returned the man's personal belongings including these photos that are clearly his back to him. It's a bit sad really that his stuff was left around then just junked. Maybe his wife or kids would have liked to have his things.

(Not to bring a downer to this thread).

See this is the problem on EF. LIB wasn't asking for people's opinions on what he should do with these signed pictures based on how he managed to get hold of them, he was asking where he can get them authenticised. He just happened to be silly enough to answer a question from a nosy newbie that had nothing to do with what he wanted to know.

Please (some) people, stop being so self-righteous & allow grown people to make their own decisions, right or wrong, about their own business before jumping to conclusions.

They are great by the way. Even copies of them would be nice having.

Isn't your post a bit self righteous too?

I think it's great that he saved them. But I also think it's bad that the company didn't return the man's belongings when he passed away.

LIB is an adult he can decide what he wants to do. From what I've read from him he isn't a shrinking violet about to be intimidated by some people online giving their opinion. It's certainly not unheard of that threads taking on new directions.

Anyway, he's even stated his point of view. So, for me all's good.
