Buying a house in Spain

I have given up looking for a house here as there none on the market. So am thinking of buying in the Alicante area and have started looking for a finca type house with garden and if possible a pool. Anyone done this? Is it the right time or should I wait a little longer in view of the economic situation?
The idea would be to rent it out before retiring to Spain in a few years time. There is no point leaving cash languishing in a bank account and I cant imagine retiring here in Switzerland. Plus my partnerin is fluent in Spanish . Any tax issues I should know about.
Any ideas?

Re: Buying a house in Spain

My old neighbours bought near Alicante in a place called Benimazot,( I think that is the name)
Yes they have a good life but they did buy some time ago.
My brother has an old farmhouse (which has a couple of cottages with it) further down in Spain. He has been trying to sell and has finally sold, just the farmhouse, after 3 years and had to sell at half what he paid. He tells me that there is a glut of properties all over the regions and prices are falling.
If it is worth your while to buy now - I don't know....

Re: Buying a house in Spain

Hi all of you,

Nice surprised when I found this thread, though not much has been said.
I am now also looking actively to buy an apartment in Alicante (Spain) and my main concern is getting a credit from a bank. Regarding our financial status shouldn’t be a problem, but I am concerned as the property won’t be in Switzerland….
Did you have problems on this issue?

@cricketer, I know Alicante very well, as my parents live there (Benidorm) and I can only recommend it. It is also nice flying there in Winter and still have a nice temperature…

Cheers
