KFC disaster

So, after having been deprived of Kentucky Fried Chicken for many years now, I have been following the posts from Lost inbroad about KFC Nirvana, and how it can be achieved just over the border in France and Germany. Skeptical at first, and knowing how really unhealthy it is, I have resisted. Then came xmas and our trip to the UK. Low and behold, KFCs everywhere. Memories of pigging out on KFC and all the fixings after a hard days work doing landscaping in the deep south brought back poignant memories of the Colonels' finger-licking good recipe and hallowed side dishes..cole slaw, buttermilk biscuit, mashed potatoes and gravey, corn on the cob.... So, I decided to bring the wife and kids to the corner KFC in Glasgow...instructing them to bow, while saying "OMMMM...OMMMM.." as we entered the hallowed temple of deep-fried ecstasy.

The result: the menu has been reduced to fried chicken, original recipe only (no extra crispy to be found), and chips. No biscuits, no cole slaw, no mashed potatoes, no corn. We ordered a bucket with the only side they had: chips, with a tub of industrial tasting salty brown "gravey". I told my kids, this is the ultimate achievement in American fast food...to enjoy the genius mixture of 11 herbs and spices. They both ate one piece. Barely touched the chips. Instead of choosing either Iron Bru, Pepsi, or fizzy orange, they opted for water (the girl behind the counter was flabbergasted).

It was a greasy, unsatisfying experience that has put me off KFC now for ever. What has the world come to?

Re: KFC disaster

The world hasn't changed, but perhaps your perception has ?
You've raised Swiss kids, here in Switzerland, it was to be expected no ?

If they had been raised in the States they might crave what we'd consider childhood "comfort" food. But it's not the case.

My kid does not rave on about poptarts no matter how much I'll crave them. They're not us, they've been raised differently.

Re: KFC disaster

If you ever find yourself in London (Brixton in South London to be more precise) and you feel like giving it another go at the KFC there, I am pretty sure your experience will be the exact opposite. Those guys really know their stuff and the portions are notoriously B.I.G .

Amazing! The people from Glasgow are renowned for eating unheathily. Did you try a deep fried Mars bar?

Re: KFC disaster

My kids know that if they want good fried chicken, it's either Buffalo wings at home, or "Poulet im Körbli" in Attinghausen.

There ARE no other choices.

Tom

P.S. This summer, younger daughter wanted lunch in Attinghausen, so we took the scenic route (by motorcycle, of course): Novena, Grimsel, Susten to Attinghausen, then Oberalp, Lucomagno home, about six hours of riding on a sport bike. But she was happy!

You should, because I intend to train my children to be "smug, self-satisfied toad"-seeking missiles.

Just sayin', like.

Re: KFC disaster

Strange ... the KFC in Barcelona was great, with all the bits and pieces I recall while growing up. The only thing against it is I think they change their oil regularly, there were no 'extras' in anything & it wasn't super-greasy.

That munchy box looks good - wish I was going to Glasgow now ...

Ah who wants Kfc when you can make it yourself at home, tasting 10 x better in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Here is all what you need, with special thanks to ReadySteadyGo

Kentucky Fried Chicken Spice
1 tablespoon thyme
1 tablespoon oregano leaves
1 tablespoon powdered sage
1 teaspoon powdered ginger
1 teaspoon marjoram
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons pepper
1 teaspoon white pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
2 tablespoons garlic salt
2 tablespoons onion salt
1 teaspoon accent or msg (OPTIONAL)

Add 2-3 Tablespoons mix to every 1 1/2 cup of flour for coating chicken.

I did a similar experiment with my Actifry, special thanks to Argus.

The result was yummie !

vallers has no particular reputation at present
Re: KFC disaster

After the munchie box, you can try a pizza crunchie - a slice of pizza dipped in batter and deep fried - must admit that I haven't been tempted with that one.

But if in Glasgow go to Bread and Butter instead....fab fab fab ...

I will never stop wanting or loving KFC (yup, it's that extreme in my case ) but sure wouldn't mind getting my gnashers into some of that fine looking chicken in your piccies. Yummie!

So when can you start!? Unfortunately, the salary will be way less than CHF 120,000 per annum

Girl, you can have a piece of my chicken anytime

Its made with only a little bit of oil, not soaked in it so you can have more without getting the side effects.

Ill settle for 119.000 thank you
