Great idea, but then he couldn't make fun of ze Germans all the time - either that, or he'd have an excuse to do it every show.

He does it pretty much every show anyway - but the far bigger problem would be the gentlemen's ego: Having a woman beating their driving abilities by miles is probably not what they would want.

Having her taking all test cars around the Nordschleife sounds a brilliant idea to me: Although I watch the shows for years, I have no idea what a lap time on the top gear track really means - it looks terribly small with tight corners. A round on the Nordschleife on the other hand can be easily compared to thousands of known lap times and records from decades... and her comments are actually funny. (I bet that it was not in the script when she originally said "I could do that in a van"...).

Re: The New 2011 Top Gear series is nearly upon us

The thing is the TG track is now a "known" quantity - all cars lap the same circuit.

The circuit itself (if you didn't know or don't have GT5) is a figure of 8. The "technical" corners are Chicago and Hammerhead - the latter really tests how well a car can change direction under braking and how well it gets back on the power. The follow through and the tyres are both flat out corners - majoring on grunt. The penultimate corner demands a car with excellent balance.

The circuit itself was designed by the chassis bods at Lotus as "perfect" test track - although it lacks off camber corners; and is also missing gradient changes.

I know the shape of the test track, but it is heavy on the handling and a bit too short to get the real differences in performance - that's why most cars are within very few seconds. And a split second difference can simply be a minimal driving mistake... I find the Nordschleife a test track as perfect as it gets as no single driving error could explain the many seconds of differences the cars would make.

The last two Sundays I watched Zen, we all know it's fiction but I found it absurd, everyone in Rome spoke perfect English, police, ministers, passers by... last time I was there the only conversations I had were to the mirror (enjoyable ones too), I don't think BBC thought it through....
Not exactly sure what this has to do with Top Gear anyway but do you seriously expect the BBC to make Zen in Italian?

Anyone know the purpose of the 747 (it is, isn't it?) on the TG runway? Is it for training the fire service or something?

Actually, I think he's very knowlegdable. There was a short-lived quiz show (maybe it's still on Dave or some such) called Petrolheads possibly? He was one of the team captains and had an encyclopedic knowledge of all things automotive.
He's a big time all-round engineering enthusiast. His show re the anniversary of the apollo missions, May on the Moon or something, is a wider showcase of his sensibilities. I've seen every tv show and dvd produced involving all three of those guys, and love them all equally.

Question: what on earth was that crap all about on the iraqi base where they landed? Did they think that was an insurgent attack helicopter? They were on a base, ffs. That part was so weird and irritating.

Hammond was in an interesting show recently called "invisible worlds."

As for the US top gear, it's at least better than the aussie and russian versions. I really liked that moonshine scene from episode 3. I got the feeling that Clarkson purposefully tried to upstage that specific episode with the first special (the one where they go to nyc), which of course they succeeded at. Seems too much of a coincidence that both involved nascar and moonshine etc.

As far as I know it's a real airbase of sorts that they rent for short periods of time to film the studio bits. The purpose of the plane being there is probably for it to be somewhere while it's not flying. hehe

Ok. Not "mistake" but "slightly off the ideal line".

In the 70s people camped on weekends at the Adenauer Forst only to watch and film drivers not managing the corner...
