öhm, the doves were a little too much...
Romance is nice, but overdoing it can be quite scary. I freaked out when an ex dragged up his guitar, song a song he wrote about me while looking me in the eyes. Too much for me. Few roses would have been enough.
I have a sweet-ish kind of friend of mine who is capable of doing such antics, but despite hes a nice guy and he is getting run around by his new gf. I ahve tried to warn him but not in so many words.

Its so painful watching him going all poodle for some girl!

So seriously you discuss them with people you don't know, on an Internet Forum? You shouldn't grumble too much if people rib you.
Can you imagine if I discuss them with people I know! Im sentimental but not stupid!

But still it does not give anyone the right to rib me.

I did the ironing.

Doesn't sound romantic, does it? But it was at that specific time.

Re: Most Romantic thing you've done or heard someone do for their partner?

I saw the most moving film last night. A French film by Phillipe Lioret, 1998, WELCOME- about a young Iraqui Kurd (17) who travels 4000 miles to Calais to try and join his beloved one who has been living in the UK. Realising he will never get across by ferry or any other means (he tries, but fails) he befriend's a swimming instructor and learns to swim and trains day and night to become strong enough to swim the Channel. He almost gets there, but panics and drowns as the UK security boat spot him a few 100m from the British coast. Now, that is love. (wasn't soppy at all - do go and see it if you get a chance).

Re: Most Romantic thing you've done or heard someone do for their partner?

My friend's husband arranged time off with her employers for 2 weeks. He packed a bag and filled it with everything he could think she would need, put it in the boot and went to pick her up from work as usual.
Instead of going home he told her that he had to pick his sister up from the airport .
In fact he had arranged a 2 week holiday in Antigua for her!!! He had arranged for their children to be cared for - animals to be fed - everything

She had no idea whatsoever.....

One of my friends was so in love with his girl that when she told him she might suffering from a rare spinal disorder he donated his entire backbone. Turned out she was just checking his level of commitment and now she carries him around in her handbag.

I think trouble is that nowadays romance seems to have to equal the amount spent. The bigger the bunch of flowers, the fancier the hotel, the larger the diamond. People look down on you if your marriage proposal wasn't somewhere fancy with champagne and chocolate and a dozen roses. My sister got engaged hiking up a hill on a rainy day whilst wearing boots and a waterproof. But the place was somewhere special to them.

Re: Most Romantic thing you've done or heard someone do for their partner?

When my (now) husband and I were about two years into our relationship, I was living in Richmond and he was working in Germany, returning home every other weekend. However, in the run up to my birthday, he informed me that his work was at a critical stage and he would not be able to get home for my birthday ...

I was pretty upset, to say the least, but my girlfriends rallied round. However, in the early evening of my birthday (which happens to be Feb 14), he rang me to ask me where I was and I told him that I was at home. Forty minutes later he rang again and told me that he had arranged a delivery for me in the entrance hall to our flat. When I opened the front door, he was standing there, soaking wet (just like in the films!!!), with a huge grin on his face. I went to pieces ...

When I was still living in Germany I'd become seriously fed up with driving to Zurich every weekend for 2 years whilst my other half (not married yet) just waited for me to arrive on Friday evenings.

Sooo - I found myself a good looking toy boy a bit closer to home. Anway, that seemed to do the trick
Christmas Eve, cold, snowy shxxit weather, my then bf (now husband) arrived with an Avis van and his best friend, rang the doorbell of where I'd moved in with the "new" guy and without any further discussion whatsoever they proceed to carry out my furniture and load it into the van to drive it and me back to Zurich. It was all so matter-of-fact and extremely romantic He never actually proposed - it was just totally clear what the consequence of that trip would be

..so hold on, you moved in with another guy while being with your now husband?

Maybe they moved the toyboy too. For, you know, entertainment?
Ah the family that plays together stays together, said my mate Dave until his wife found his DVD collection with her best friend in a starring role......

or the opposite of romance - a true story,
A friend and her husband were driving through far west Queensland having one of their usual, intense arguments. He stops the car in the middle of nowhere and says "if you don't shutup, I will kill you and bury you in a shallow grave" at which stage my friend burst into tears and said "after all we have been through together, you wouldn't even dig a proper hole?" She did say when describing the incident "I did deserve to be killed, it was a full moon, I had the worst PMTs of my life, I was on a water fast with the daily temp in mid 40s, so I was pretty evil" but the shallow grave comment really broke my heart...

Re: Most Romantic thing you've done or heard someone do for their partner?

What about this German millionaire playboy Gunter Sachs who shot his brains out in Gstaad this weekend?
A few hours after meeting Brigitte Bardot in the 60s he hired a helicopter to drop hundreds of red roses onto her property. He ended up marrying her.
