I wanted to start a thread about a question that I have regarding one of my favourite movies. I however was thinking, that it would be a little selfish of me to hog cyberspace like that and therefore I decided to start this thread where people can ask questions pertaining to movies.

My question is: In the movie Chinatown with Jack Nicholson, they referred to summer colds a few times....meaning, that there were some characters who had a cold and then (usually Jack) would say "Yeah, summer colds are supposedly the worst..". I never really under stood this repeated mentioning of a summmer cold. Now, were summer colds a real issue back then? Was it bad screen writing? Or was there a secret meaning behind that?

Pure baloney as far as I know. Anyone can get a cold at any time. The seriousness depends on the particular virus and the individual themselves ie whether they are particularly susceptible to a particular bug, or respiratory infections in general.

Edit: with regard to some kind of movie in-joke secret meaning, I haven't got a bastard clue, sorry.

It's absolute ages since I've seen this movie ( and Tequila Sunrise ) and so I don't remember if there was a drug sub-plot in the movie but...

I used to joke with a friend about all of his summer colds... poor guy was sniffing all the time ( he was a coke dealer / coke head himself )

I doubt it. I've summer colds before....but having it mentioned on various occasion made me somewhat suspicious.

I can't stand her as an actress. It seems, that they tried made an ugly woman look good on screen. Which to me, ultimately failed.
