Re: THE search FUNCTION

There is obviously no point at all in a perfectly functioning Search Function if the Members do not know what they are actually looking for anyway. (with a superior smile as befits a Mod chastising an EFer!)

Re: THE search FUNCTION

An old friend in England got into no end of trouble in a bookshop after asking for something different. The shop assistant asked for clarification, a favourite author or genre or something to help him to help her, but still she insisted that she wanted something different and that naming random authors wasn't going to help her in her search.

Eventually the exasperated shop keeper announced that he couldn't help her if even she had no idea what she was looking for.

"But I do!" cried my friend in frustration. "I want a book, the title of which is 'Something Different'. Do you have it or not?"

I suspect the EF search engine has about the same level of intelligence as this shop assistant (mind, the shop was in Melton Mowbray, which probably explains a lot...)

Re: THE search FUNCTION

A beer on me for the one who can dig up an old thread that was called something like "Which EFers would you like to meet?" turns out the only word that is searchable in that title is "meet" ... not too useful. I think I was rather new or not very active when this thread was alive, so 2007-2008?

Gentlemen, your finds do not have any of the content described, do they?

Maybe it was spelled "meat"?

Where's that thread thread?

We need a place for those of us who can't seem to find anything with the search function to post our request for help finding "that thread"....

Is the search function bad or is it just me?

Anyway, I'm trying to find the person who wanted to import a gun they inherited... Anyone remember that thread?

OMG! You are a genius! I didn't know you could do that.

You should probably change your picture.

Maybe something like this would be better:

Re: Where's that thread thread?

As the main search function doesn't seem to work properly, I generally use Quick links - Advanced search - Search titles only

Re: Where's that thread thread?

The new simple search seems to work quite well for me. For this one 'import*' brought it up OK. It also works for two words (keeping default 'and').

Re: Where's that thread thread?

Yes Longbyt that is the one. It did not come up for me with the words "import gun" "importing gun" "gun inheritance" and a bunch of other terms.... I did not use the *.

"Import gun" did however come up on google/englishforum.ch as you can see by UptheHatters links. I'll try to remember to search through google. it seems to work better.

thanks everyone!
