| | Britain : A guy is going to be Granddad at 29
From the Sun A LAYABOUT dad bragged yesterday about the prospect of becoming Britain's youngest grandad. The scrounger, 29, said he was chuffed his 14-year-old daughter was pregnant and crowed: "It's quite mad... I'm about to be a grandad. "I was 14 when my daughter was born - and now she's having a baby." The schoolgirl became pregnant by her 15-year-old boyfriend and is expected to give birth in August. The pair, from South Wales, are pupils at the same comprehensive school and have been dating for several months. She announced her news to pals on Facebook by updating her status to "looking for a pram with the mr". Her jobless dad - who is separated from her mum - said proudly: "She is very young but was determined to keep the child. "We were not going to force her into doing anything else. We don't want her to hate us. "She is not the only girl at her school to become pregnant or to have a baby. "We don't blame the lad who got her pregnant - it takes two." The girl's mum, who works in a cafe, has two other children. She now lives with another jobless man on a council estate - where they have a flatscreen TV and Blackberry mobile phones. Outside, children's bicycles are strewn carelessly across their muddy lawn. Her new boyfriend said of the grandad-to-be: "Not only will this guy be Britain's youngest grandad, he already has the title of Britain's worst dad. "He has not contributed a penny to his daughter's upbringing. I'm not sure that he has worked in his life." He said he planned to raise the baby while his stepdaughter continues at school. She has said she wants to stay at school until the child is born and go back to study afterwards. Her boyfriend dreams of becoming a professional rugby player when he leaves school. The mum-to-be will have a scan soon to reveal the gender of her child. Already the pair are talking about possible names for their baby. Advertisement One local councillor said last night: "This is a deprived area - but thankfully families like this one, who are unwilling to contribute to society, are rare. "Those who have made a lifestyle out of claiming benefits are very much the exception, not the rule." Another councillor said: "It is a shame for everyone that some people choose to live their entire lives on benefits. "When living at the taxpayer's expense becomes a way of life, it is an extremely unfortunate situation." A neighbour of the family said: "They would much rather sit at home having children than try to better themselves. It's a disgrace."
That's weird !!!!

Any embarassment or shame I thought I felt at the British connection was banished when I realised Bertrand had admitted to being a SUN reader!
There really is no excuse you know.

I knew a guy who was a grandad at 28. But then, he had married an older woman with kids from a previous marriage.

Sounds like the UK is going down the slippery slope that is America. I worked in a large hospital in the US in the late 80's. At our OB-GYN indigent clinic we had three patients pregnant all at the same time: the grandmom, 36, the mom, 24, and the daughter, 12. All pregnant. All at the same time. Not a father in sight. Crazy.

"Family" is defined many, many different ways in America. One kind of family is not more "normal" than any other kind of family. It Is Called Political Correctness.

Whatever happened to these under age laws to protect kids from stuff like this?
I thought the father (to be) could be convicted of under age sex too!

No clue about British laws but, seems to me that for "under age sex" to be against the law, it kinda requires that one partner is of age and the other is under - aka "statutory rape."
I've not seen any laws (but am not a lawyer ) which specify anything regarding what age it is legal / illegal to have sex, but rather what age the other person has to be in order for "you" to have sex with them. For example, a 13yo having sex with a 17yo is not breaking the law but a 17yo having sex with a 13yo is.
Please do correct me if I'm wrong though.
Meanwhile, this old discussion again... lol.
Having sex at that age is NATURAL, heck, "practicing sex" (such as "playing doctor" or whatever you may have called it when you were a kid) is pretty normal even at younger ages.
It is "merely" societal changes which have placed stigma upon these acts, in interest of allowing children the opportunity to get an education and get some employment background prior to being saddled with children.
Sure it is something of a shame to hear of such a young person having a baby, you know their future has now (for a couple of years particularly) becoming just that much more tough.
Of course, the potential future still have possibilities of success in modern definitions, the successes are merely possibly postponed a bit and a little harder to achieve due to the attention needed by the little one. Even so, IF there is a good enough support network for the new parents, the disruption to their future success within those modern definitions could be quite minimal.
Ah well, I guess this is one of those cases that I see the potential still there for someone else, it helps me (temporarily) put aside how stagnated I am feeling by the stumbling blocks in my way. Much like myself, the future for those youngins is there for them - if they're willing to put the right kind of effort themselves AND they have the right kind of support AND they're willing to ask for help and even more importantly, ACCEPT it when it is offered.

OHMWTFBBQ! Obviously this one story sums up the whole of Britain. You'd never get 14 year-olds having sex in other countries, like, say Italy...
