The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy....

Am I the only one on the planet who doesn't "get it" and/or thinks it's stoopid?
Is my IQ just too low? Or is it a specific type of person who likes it? Or is a "cultural thing" or a "sub-cultural thing"?

Just curious....

Books - Brilliant
Radio - Ok
TV Series Ok
Film - Crap

Nothing new there I suppose.

Then again, like Monty Python, it has a legendary status that isn't lived up to when seen as a whole, it has moments of brilliance but overall can be hit and miss for most people.

Like fine wines, it's trendy to like, to be seen to be liking, and not have a clue why you like it.

Re: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy....

I've never been able to actually read the book. But I have the film playing now in the background.... I'm glad to hear that the film is particularly crap... I was starting to wonder about the sanity of the "fans". LOL.

Massive generalisation ahead,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT

is this not true of the majority of films/books etc??

Books = best.
Films = the next best thing if you cant read,,,,,

just a few egs, that spring to mind in the first 30 secs of contemplation;

Life and Death of Charlie St Cloud
touching the void

Ironically, the radio series appeared BEFORE the other stuff.

But, yes, I agree.

Re: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy....

I've been a fan since it was originally broadcast on Radio 4. I've always liked it. Way before it became trendy. It was a god-send in a geography lesson when we were discussing the impact of a new bypass being built locally... I can still quote that bit verbatim.

Of all the six media by which I've observed it - Radio (I've got the strips), TV, film, books, text-based adventure game (available on line and very silly), towel - the only one I was disappointed with was the TV. I've not seen the stage play. Though the lady sitting at the bar in the film, played Tricia McMillan in the theatre.

I got a drink out of a vogon once, without sticking my fingers down his throat. One of my school friends had his 18th birthday bash at my local pub. His dad - Bill Wallace, who played the Vogon in the radio version - bought a round.

If you don't get it, it doesn't mean your stupid etc. it probably means you lack some cultural references, or have a different sense of humour. Don't worry about it. I certainly don't worry about why people hate the film, when I love it. Bless-you.

Re: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy....

I am an american female and LOVE Hitcherhikers and the Dirk Gently series as well. I started reading the books in the 80's and all my friends (girls) loved them too. Although I 'was' a nerd (also loved Dr. Who). I knew where my towel was, never Panicked and could recite vogon poetry.

I think Douglas Adams was an absolute genius - not just his fiction but other articles he's written as well. I downloaded a bunch of things years ago - never read them all - must go find it again............ Although one quote I do remember was that he thought 'Technology' was 'stuff that doesn't work yet'.

This isn't the the case at all with hitchhikers. The movie was disgraceful, and nothing at all like anything DNA would have written. They ruined it. He died and then they raped him, like they raped indiana jones, but ten times worse.

If you have to watch something watch the mini series.

Wrong!!

I am a Brit and I "got" the Stooges. My wife is a Yank and "got" Hitchhikers, Only Hools, Fawlty T etc.

The Hitchikers books were great, the TV show was..different and the movie was well and hour and 29mins long
