I was talking to one of my nephews ( on facebook ) the other day.. the kid is 19, grown up near Boston, now at Uni. in Halifax has traveled near and far and has about 600 facebook friends...
.
I asked him why he was on facebook instead of out the pub or something... he told me he didn't know anyone there.
Yes, exactly. I think there's a big difference between what facebook calls friends and what I was thinking of. Obviously part of this is me being from an older generation and not quite being able to get my head around 21st-century social networking, but I still wonder and worry about the long-term consequences of a model where friendship consists of posting one-liners to each other over the internet.

And to Stephen in Neuchatel, my family moved so much when I was a child, I attended 18 different schools before I graduated from high school. In my opinion, it makes you a more outgoing and well-rounded person. Two sides to every story, dude. All depends on the attitude of your family toward embracing new adventures and opportunities.

I often wonder what the implications of the current trend towards increasingly global mobility are for future generations. How will children put down roots, make lasting friendships and so on if they are constantly moving from town to town or from country to country because of their parents' careers ? Not that the parents always have much choice in the matter, of course - sadly it's all too often a straight choice bentween relocation or unemployment.
I'll try to answer this based on my experience. I was a trailing kid, and my parents chose their lifestyle - it wasn't due to economic hardship, but because they liked to explore different places and learn about different cultures.

Most of my roots are in France (where I spent my summers as a child) and the US, although my nostalgia for Africa (I spent my early childhood there) has led me to go back and live there several times. I also feel 'at home' when I'm back in London.

I am still in touch with friends back from when I was 2 years old, as well as friends from primary, middle and high school. These are definitely lasting friendships. When you are away from your extended family, friends become like family, so the bonds you create are very strong. Physical distance does not have to equate to emotional distance, and I have a network of people I know I can count on all around the world. Writing letters, phone calls, emails, skype, etc are all really helpful in staying connected.

The only negative aspect I find is that I get itchy feet after a while, and want to move after spending 4-5 years in the same place. I miss the sense of adventure of discovering new places.

There seem to be a lot of powerful women around at the moment, at my company, the heads of R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Project Management, IT services, HR and Commercial Operations are all women in their 40s and 50s.
