What web sites would you pay for ?

Just reading the iPad thread and all the hassles people go to , to get access to quality content sites such as the BBC.

This got me thinking, I would willingly pay a reasonable subscription to get unrestricted iPlayer access to all all BBC content. I also remember fiddling briefly with the X-Box and almost subscribing to Sky content.

So, what web sites would you pay for if they change to the subscription model ?

BBC.CO.UK - Iplayer and TV , I would willingly pay the UK TV License fee to get the same access as license payers.

English Forum....Hmmm Maybe a low subscription to keep it going and if content improved (Perhaps we could have a fee to introduce a ban on some muppets that have been posting lately)

Google Probably the greatest site to assist me in every area, not just searches, but Email, Docs , Maps etc. It's simply an amazing site.

Not many others come to mind. The others I visit are loaded with advertising and that offsets any thing I would have considered paying or subscribing to, hence I have to grudgingly admit that advertised sites are a necessary evil.

Would you pay for a site to get rid of advertising and clear/clean up it's content ? I would.

Also, in England, the local councils charge business rates, and use that money to fund Office Parks, parking , transport and general utilities/facilities to assist Business growth etc. Should Governments/Councils/Cantons charge business an Internet Tax, to generate a fund to promote a quality commercial Internet Infrastructure ? Quality , bandwidth and access for all etc...

I would not pay for this forum. I don't think I'd pay for any website actually unless I really, really felt it was worth it.

I know, in Ireland we had these also called " the rates " - a big nono.. mafia robbing you blind they are.

I always wondered how much of that money was actualy put to use, and how much went into their pockets..

those rates can go in the same category as billag etc..

(not personal UTH, just don't share our vision )

Re: What web sites would you pay for ?

The trick is that there are millions of free websites and to make me get out my wallet, a website needs to offer something truly unique - otherwise I will wander off to a free alternative.

I have paid for web services in the past and will do so in the future. Some were a waste of money, others were worth it.
- I was a paying member of "experteer" once as I fell for their aggressive advertisement which you can now often find as a banner ad here as well - was a waste of money as they were in no way better than free alternatives like monster.
- I paid for services that make my life less difficult. I once made a larger online survey and while I am technically able to build some website with some forms myself and extract the data into some MS Access database or something to play around afterwards - it would have cost me some days to do so and there were plenty of online services offering an easy editor and sets of tools for a low 2 digit fee. Why on earth would I not pay that...

Would I pay for the English Forum: No. This is my favourite discussion board, but there are enough free alternatives around that I would leave instead of paying.

Not sure if paying for watching certain girls online counts

But yes, in that way i would pay too, (for certain toold and software, not the girls gone wild thing..) i have paid a small price for certain programs, just because they make life so much easier, as long as it stays reasonable, and they offer a free trail before you buy then yes, i would pay.

The forum however no, even if it was loaded with banners, i would scroll by.

Paying for the forum would mean many people just would not be bothered, even if it was a small fee.

Knowing some of them here, they would startup a free forum in 2 minutes and move

The thread is worthless without a poll

Some people would pay for websites, some wouldn't at all!

Re: What web sites would you pay for ?

I believe you can pay a subscription fee for a proxy server based in the uk which then allows you to get all iplayer etc sites. I know someone in Denmark that uses it and its around 5 a month.

I don't as I have cablecom anyway.

I don't think a proxy server can bypass subscriptions...

Yeah for sure. I'm no expert but from what I understand it makes bbc iplayer think you are based in the uk (in other words it thinks you are a license payer) and therefore you have access.

Here a thread by some interesting guy who thought about it long before you.
Would you be willing to pay an English Forum fee?
