Re: The King's Speech: It left me speechless!

Good movie. As a stutterer, some scenes brought up difficult memories and were pretty hard to watch.

The uproar about the language is only for ratings reasons in the US. Anyone over 12 should have no problem with the profanity in this film. If you do, I don't know what to tell you.

Re: The King's Speech: It left me speechless!

We're off to see it tonight and to be honest I am much more excited about a night at the cinema than the film. How I miss being able to go to the pictures whenever I want. *sigh*.

Anyway back on topic. This is not the sort of movie I would choose to go and watch normally as I'm not a big fan of films about the Royal family or historical films in general . Although I do like war films and stuff about the Tudors.

(The only reason we are is it's being shown in the deluxe part where you get free popcorn, warm food and drinks)

Anyone able to drum up some enthusiasm for me about this film apart from "It's great" and "there's a dude that stutters"?

It's less than two hours long.

The problem is , even though Helena Bonham Carter does a good job as the Queen Mum, you see her and immediately think of her in a chimp costume ...

And quite worrying, it's the only time I think I have fancied a chimp !!

Regarding the film: Is there a lot of bad language in it, and if so, of what nature?
The context of the "bad language" is as follows. Many believe, though no one is entirely sure, that the predominant cause of stuttering (stammering in US English) is a body/brain feedback loop. Something akin to the brain continuously second-guessing the body as it tried to speak. There are various "ways to speak" that don't engage a stutter (or much of one) and this includes, speaking to oneself, to a pet or small child, singing, speaking loudly or in a rage. Swearing is part of it, it's verbal but it's not speaking - it's an emotional response, and can enable the "feedback loop" to be momentarily broken.

I was terribly disappointed with the King's Speech. Well acted and professionally presented. But it covers old ground. Anyone who has watched British TV during the 20 years, will know the story - ad nausium. It's sort of 'Mrs Simpson meets Churchill with that Mr Hitler makes the trains run on time' in the background. .
I've watched British TV for the last forty years and utterly disagree with AbFab on this one.

The girl playing Princess Margaret deserves an Oscar. But I've thought that since watching "Outnumbered".

Re: The King's Speech: It left me speechless!

Well, I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by this film. I purely went for the popcorn and a night away from the munchkin with my better half but this took me by surprise. I really enjoyed it and found it touching as well as funny. Those Oscar's were well deserved.

@NotAllThere: I totally agree with you about the little girl from Outnumbered. What a star

It was ok - over hyped , well acted ...
But in normal Hollywood fashion, everyone has gone over the top. And as the rest of the film industry could only put forward lame efforts it won.

But, c'mon guys, get a grip!
PS - it's also not very historically accurate - chronology , settings and realtionships have been strongly altered for impact. So please view it as a story ...
I agree, I enjoyed it but its overhyped and utterly predictable.

Well I for one thought it was a fantastic film, funny and sad. Mr Organ went prepared to be completely underwelmed and ended up really enjoying it.
