A Quiz for Brits.

People applying for UK citizenship now have to pass a Life in The UK Quiz.
Here’s a sample of 20 questions (keep a note of your score as you go along because it does not keep a an automatic total).

Bank Holidays. I though they meant which ones are call Bank Holiday like Spring Bank Holiday, etc. Twunts.
20 people in the Cabinet? 20 Twunts. Now I'll remember.
And you can vote at 18 but only stand for election at 21? Twunts.

Re: A Quiz for Brits.

25 members in the EU now...wow.
Wonder what would happen if they made everyone currently living in the UK take the test.
I reckon there would be some pretty full ferries going to France the next day.

Re: A Quiz for Brits.

The answer about the PM being the leader of the party in power is not totally correct.

Acting on the "advice" of parliament, the Queen invites the person most likely command a majority in parliament to form a government (and be Prime Minister) - though in practice this will most likely be the leader of the majority party.

For example, Alex Douglas Home was appointed by the Queen as Macmillan had to stand down due to ill health and the Tory party had at that time no formal procedure for selecting a leader.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: A Quiz for Brits.

Is this question right?
Quote:
What language, aside from English, is widely spoken in Scotland?
Who speaks Gaelic in Scotland? What %?

...and what is "stell production" in:
Quote:
What five countries established the European Union after the Second World War by signing an agreement putting all their coal and stell production under the control of a single authority?
Spelling is not a requirement for citizenship then?

And what's that business about chocolate Easter eggs

I guess 'widely' is a bit of a trick, as it is not spoken by a lot of people, but the communities that speak it (i.e. the highlands and islands) are fairly widely spread apart!

not a lot, but they still get government funding for their own TV channels & dual lingo road signs .... EC directives gone mad.

Wait til they start on Romania ... something in the region of 20 different ethnic minorities are recognised by the state.....

So the correct answer to "What language, aside from English, is widely spoken in Scotland?" is none...

Clearly someone doesn't want to give out work permits.

Re: A Quiz for Brits.

Scots is actually considered by some to be a language in itself. I consider it a dialect but it is still taught to youngsters in some schools. It is still widely spoken by people throughout Scotland.

And, just when you thought things could not get worse -
Here are further questions from the test selected by the B.B.C.

MORE QUESTIONS

and, to quote the Home Office

Quote:
The British Nationality Act 1981 requires all applicants to have a sufficient knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic. Arrangements will be made for anyone wishing to take the test in either Welsh or Scottish Gaelic for the same fee as tests set in English.
