No... the chap in the video on this thread was making jokes about George Bush! That Colgate fellow.

Oh I see what you mean now.

That vid is over 3 years old. Ancient in terms of American history

Re: How does one reply to "America is the best country..."

Well, I'd say it depends upon whether the person who says so is American or not - and whether you can tell whether they're trying to be witty / sarcastic / funny, or if they're honestly saying what they feel.

Also, apparently since the "discussion" comes up, one reply could be "Do you mean North or South? And if you mean North, do you mean Canada, US or Mexico - or some of the nearby island nations?" After all, so many folks around here seem to want to push the fact that all of the New World is technically "America", why not use it to your advantage?

Admittedly, although I have a huge softspot for "America" (as in, the US), I also can see it's weaknesses as well. Whether I want them shoved in my face or not is a whole other story - kinda like talking about someone else's mother.

Taking the OP seriously, I've met several Swiss who wholeheartedly believe that the USA is the greatest country on earth, and wish they had moved there when they were younger and it was a possibility.

I think half the world wishes they can move there. They just have a hard time admitting it.

I love facebook, but if you've got to the point of trying to get suggestions for comments on people's updates, you may be taking it far too seriously.

anyway the correct response is
"Down with America! Down with the Infidels! Soon Allah will come and wipe them from the face of the earth! Alah Akbar!"

Colbert is the smartest political satirist in the U.S. today. His character is an over-the-top, right wing nutjob like the guys on FOX, but it's all in jest.

It is not because someone say something stupid or inapropriate that is it good to repeat. If Colbert ask you to jump down the bridge will you do it?

I'm of the opinion that if it needs to be explained, it's not funny, but seriously?

I actually think the opposite. It is a fantastic place to work, conduct business and accomplish things. There is freedom to carve your own path over there, and an infrastructure to support it.

For standard of living in regards to safety and such, it is much cheaper to achieve higher qualities here. The quality of the average neighborhood here is roughly equivalent to some of the best neighborhoods there, in terms of safety and security.

But in any case, America still rocks for those who rock.

You're American. We're not. I suspect our opinions regarding "half the world wishes they could move there" might carry a little more weight than yours.

(And like Castro, I loved the place when I visited - but live there? I don't think so...)
