I wonder if this thread is going to continue being a "we're cooler than you because we know who Steven Colgate is and you don't, ha ha ha..." orgy, or are people going to acknowledge that the world does not revolve around tiresome, smug metropolitan American comedians...?
You're the one to complain, your country has "GREAT" on it's name.. how douchy is that ...

How does one reply without starting WWIII?
When I started this thread, I didn't know who Steven Colbert was.

I've been informed he's an American satirist (not comedian), not to take the above quote seriously and he's a possible Presidential candidate in the USA.

The world is getting stranger by the minute.

I'm off to Fasnacht: at least there I know when I'm being had.

I think most people who know of him see him as quite the famous figure.
Whereas those people who don't know of him (that is, the overwhelming majority of the population of this planet), don't.

He's a television celebrity in a foreign country. Why should Olygirl, or anyone else in Switzerland, for that matter, have ever heard of him?

Re: How does one reply to "America is the best country..."

Sad fact: Most Americans depend on the Daily Show and Colbert Report for their daily news, since FOX and CNN are even more of a joke. When BBC America became available in the US a while back I was so grateful.

A similar situation would be if I saw the following on facebook (hypothetical):

"I can't wait for the day I marry my Prince" - Kate Middleton.

and I would post it here asking if all women are as dissillusioned as this crazy women (whoever she is).

Fair enough I have no clue who she is, but I'm sure I would beaten into the troll-ground for not having this common knowledge.

Exactly---it's irrelevant where they're from or what countries know who they are, just the idea that it is a person of general fame a simple search would clear up unrelated to their country of fame.

I'd reply: "You can always tell an American… but you can’t tell him/her much…because they already know it all!"

"General fame" is a rather subjective notion, don't you think?

she is famous in CH, at least my part of it. LOL But I wouldn't 'blame' anybody for not knowing who she is.

laking a better metric term, it seemed to suit the situation best. Usually google trends, wikipedia article length and statistics is a fairly good basis of general fame.

Is it cut and dry? No. Is there a specific number of hits, or words in the article when the 'thing of interest' becomes famous? No.

But generally speaking if one considers themselves informed, and are not familiar with such 'thing of interest' and they are not totally aware of that 'thing's' relevance after a quick 2 minute internet search, said person is not at all informed (or apt at searching).
