Oh please ! Steven Colbert is a US hating jacka$$. It's very sad indeed that there are Americans watching his show as news.
I don't believe some are taking it as news. Isn't there a disclaimer at the beginning? Everyone knows it is parody. Although I think some right-wingers can't figure out whether or not he is a real right-winger. He plays that up and has never stepped out of character. Sobeit.

Same could be said of any of the Fux News presenters; their version of Patriotism is rather curious, to a non-natives eyes at least.

But generally speaking if one considers themselves informed, and are not familiar with such 'thing of interest' and they are not totally aware of that 'thing's' relevance after a quick 2 minute internet search, said person is not at all informed (or apt at searching).
I'm sure Britney Spears or Katie Price bring up plenty of hits if searched for on the internet. Does not knowing about them mean that somebody is ill-informed, or does this principle only apply to those who aren't familiar with television comedians from the United States?

Watching Fox news is like watching a bad action movie. Its so bad it is funny. Just don't take them seriously otherwise your blood pressure will go up. Christopher Hitchens was on FOX once discussing Jerry Falwell's death. I watch this video now and again its so funny:

To give a bit of context to Colbert's statement, he was quoting Fox News host Sean Hannity:

http://www.colbertnation.com/the-col...-loves-america

It's been a running joke on the show for a few years now.

Is this ironic or what? You are surfing on a digital application that was invented by the US (internet). You are specifically going on a social media product invented by an American in a Harvard dormroom. (Facebook) Another great product brought to you by the courtesy of America. Just by using the internet and Facebook you are spreading the proposition, that the US is still a dominant force in world, at least when it comes to entrepreneurial inventions.
Please don't forget the team effort here!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_computing

Indeed, when John Napier discoveredlogarithms for computational purposes in the early 17th century, there followed a period of considerable progress by inventors and scientists in making calculating tools. The apex of this early era of formal computing can be seen in the difference engine and its successor the Analytical Engine, which was never completely constructed but was designed in detail, both by English man Charles Babbage born 26.12.1791 – died 18.10.1871.
The analytical engine combined concepts from his work and that of others to create a device that if constructed as designed would have possessed many properties of a modern electronic computer. These properties include such features as an internal "scratch memory" equivalent to RAM, multiple forms of output including a bell, a graph-plotter, and simple printer, and a programmable input-output "hard" memory of punch cardswhich it could modify as well as read. The key advancement which Babbage's devices possessed beyond those created before his was that each component of
the device was independent of the rest of the machine, much like the components of a modern electronic computer. This was a fundamental shift in thought; previous computational devices served only a single purpose, but had to be at best disassembled and reconfigured to solve a new problem. Babbage's devices could be re-programmed to solve new problems by the entry of new data, and act upon previous calculations within the same series of instructions. Ada Lovelace took this concept one step further, by creating a program for the analytical engine to calculate Bernoulli numbers, a complex calculation requiring a recursive algorithm. This is considered to the first example of a true computer program, a series of instructions that act upon data not known in full until the program is run.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web

The World Wide Web (W3), abbreviated as WWW and commonly known as the Web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them via hyperlinks. Using concepts from earlier hypertext systems, English engineer and computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee, now the Director of the World Wide Web Consortium, wrote a proposal in March 1989 for what would eventually become the World Wide Web.[1]At CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliauproposed in 1990 to use "HyperText ... to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will",[2]and publicly introduced the project in December.[3]

I didn't know who Colbert was either until recently when a friend sent me a link to one of his sketches. < yawn >

Check out the UK comedians: Frankie Boyle, Jack Dee, Hugh Dennis, Rob Brydon, Sanjeev Bashkar, Andy Parsons, Stephen K. Amos, Dara O'Briain (oops he's Irish),...

You Yanks just don't know what you're missing...

Re: How does one reply to "America is the best country..."

The point is not that Colbert is the world's best comedian or that anyone outside the U.S. should know him. He dismantles the intricacies of American politics -- so yes, YAWN, if you don't live in the U.S. The point is that the O.P.'s friend is probably American and was posting within the context of 99% of her friends knowing who Colbert is, a liberal satirist who is taking aim at exactly the uneducated hillbilly attitude that bugs the crap out of Europeans. There would have been a lot of eye-rolling across the pond if she would have answered seriously.

And YOU are are moron! (sorry to all the TRUE morons out there, you ARE better).

Had you a brain, you would know that the Internet was invented by some bozos at CERN, and NOT in the US. Now, WHERE is CERN, MORON?

Also, had you'd paid attention, you'd have noticed that this is NOT a FACEBOOK discussion!

You have obviously been imparting of FAR too many illegal substances in these days.

Back OFF, PUNK!

I hate this stupid digression because it is idiotic.

The Internet was developed by the US military as a communication network that can withstand a nuclear attack, as the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network(ARPANET). The concept started in the early 60's as an Intergalactic Computer Network. It got funded in the 60s, and became widely used in the 70s. It was available at military installations and University.

The network uses protocols for the transfer of data. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) being for file transfers. Berners-Lee, an Englishman at CERN proposed using an index and retrieval system for the massive amounts of documentation CERN was producing. He suggested using embedded links in documents containing the address of other document on the local network - using Hypertext. He dubbed it HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)... THAT IS ALL.

Hypertext was not even his idea as it was used before in consumer products. The early Apple computers, which predate's Berners-Lee's proposal shipped with a product called Hypercard, which is built on the concept of Hypertexting. And Berners-Lee was a known Mac afficianado. You can thank an Apple engineer by the name of Bill Atkins for that, an unsung hero of the revolution.

So simply, an Englishman at CERN, using Californian ingenuity and technology thought to put it to use, nothing more than that.

Viva Revolucion!

Exactly. So, with all the above info in mind, I'll reply with:

"And that's why I'm voting for Sarah Palin for US President in 2015."

St2lemans: I stopped taking your post seriously at "And YOU are are moron!" As for the name calling and allegations of drug abuse... really? I don't think any of the members do each other or themselves any favors by besmirching the quality of the discourse on this forum with this childish language. In case you missed the Facebook connection; the OP had orginally read the message she was commenting on through Facebook, hence my comment.

Phos: thanks for the wikipedia link: you see I would credit DARPA, MIT and Stanford with the early development of the internet and I would use the following statement to justify the credit I gave the US for this invention:
Larry G. Roberts created the first functioning long-distance computer networks in 1965 and designed the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), the seed from which the modern Internet grew, in 1966.
