Okay, fine. Because of this thread and Colbert, I hereby plan to change tact.
The notion that "America is the greatest, bestest... blah blah." is probably exactly what is doing the country in. Although I actually agree with it, there is nothing positive in it. It's like a substance abuser's denial. By chanting it, they don't deal with their own problems at home.
Perhaps my new mantra might be; "America is the fattest, laziest, stupidest slob of a country in the world."
Maybe if enough Americans started parroting this, the country can start focusing on what really needs to be done to maintain its position as the greatest and bestest.
Colbert, the satirist, has more impact than people can quantify.

Colbert on O'Reilly Factor. O'Reilly doesn't understand Colbert even when he isn't being subtle, just like a few of the people who post here. |

You are allowed to write And at the beggining of a sentence. specially when you are trailing someone else's comment. |

Colbert, the satirist, has more impact than people can quantify. | | | | | I would comment that Americans in large part do indeed proclaim that "America is the fattest, laziest, stupidest slob of a country in the world."
What has always positively surprised me in coming to America is that people are so open to self-criticism of their own country and the problems of their own society. People take that criticism and turn it around. For example:
Look at American television shows such as " The Biggest Loser" or " Extreme Home Makeover". These shows tackle poverty, lack of home ownership and obesity, which are big problems in the US. The programs are engineered to publicly acknowledge the problems but display the message that with the help of the community these problems can be effectively tackled. I realize, I am using television shows to illustrate my point and that the US government is too caught up in political in-fighting to address such social issues engulfing US society.
I think when it comes to the bureaucratical apparatus, America does not have the best solution. Instead maybe the message should be: "American politicians are the fattest, laziest, stupidest slobs in the whole world."

Smart, but smug. | | | | | Ah, but no you're the smug git living on "la cote" in Switzerland. You showed them! | Quote: | | | | | Colbert is the smartest political satirist in the U.S. today. His character is an over-the-top, right wing nutjob like the guys on FOX, but it's all in jest. | | | | | I also think he is very funny. Funnier than the daily show guy. I would have guessed DB would have like him. But I guess he's really not very subtle. | Quote: | | | | | You're the one to complain, your country has "GREAT" on it's name.. how douchy is that ... | | | | | roflmao. nice one!
