Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

Lots of people slagging off U2.

I think it was Billy Bragg who said U2 was the '8th wonder of the world'. Or rather how they sold records was the 8th wonder of the world.

He also told the story of how George Michael cried when Elton John called him (George) the 'best songwriter of his generation'. He said 'George Michael cried - and I cried too, along with just about every other songwriter'.

I think he had a point on both counts.

I can't tell the difference between Britney and Christina but ok, I'll go with Britney then.
I think they are very different. Christina has produced some quite acceptable tracks.

thanks for the post...but ...STEVIE is a genius... he has influenced thousands of artists for decades ..on what basis your judgement?
I just don't see anything about Stevie Wonder that makes him stand out from the masses of other singers.

It's the groove, not what he sings but how he sings it and the music of course. 'I just called to say I love you' has to be about the worst song ever though - total rubbish on every level in my opinion.

I guess neither of you will be singing those to anyone anytime soon then eh!?

Seriously, I agree with you both. So much so that Mr Wonder is going on my OVERrated list at No. 2.

I think this belongs in the 'terrible jokes' thread.

I remember seeing Marillion live in the Elliot Dining Rooms at Kent/Canterbury University when I was a teenager. Market Square Heroes was in the charts at the time if I remember correctly.

If I said it was the best gig I ever saw.....I would be lying. But I do quite like them still though when I'm in the right mood.

Oh c'mon Julius! Okay, for that he goes to No. 3 on the OVERrated list instead of No. 2.

No. 2 Can be that dreadful DJ Bobo - ugh!

Oh and that phrase "a daughter of R&B" has a nice ring to it. Thanks!

well, my best gig was Queen in Fréjus (Cote d'Azur)...July 30th 1986
It was so beautiful that the memory had to fade before I enjoyed another live performance.

Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

Cool to see Elbow, Inspiral Carpets and Moloko here, I like.
This is one of my 1st bass lines I learned. She is hot.

There are too many underrated bands...
Harvey Milk, Mars Volta, Uz jsme doma, Swans, Godspeed.. Loads on Constellation recs, 4AD. Then composers, Arvo Part, etc.

Overrated? Most that gets pushed by marketing to the commercial radios. If we get to hear them on those stations it is usually not their music that is selling, but cash behind music industry.

Interesting choices...mostly under the radar screen

Personally the best music is the one with a catchy refrain, played by talented musicians, sung by an unmistakable voice (for example Rod Stewart, Freddy Mercury, Tony Hadley, Sting, Daryl Hall, Michael McDonalds, Peter Cetera, George Michael, Billy Joel, Robbie Williams) but not too commercial to become annoying

Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

To my previous underrated artist, might I add Sufjan Stevens?

You may place him just above Edgar Broughton.

So that's:

A: Sufjan Stevens
B: Edgar Broughton Band

Y: Bob Dylan
Z: John Lennon (solo)

Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

Sixty Million albums sold.

Seven platinum and six gold albums.

Six number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

Best selling duo of all time ahead of Everly Brothers.

but still massively underappreciated and my Nr.2 UNDERRATED ARTIST

I'm talking about

DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

In 2007, Daryl Hall launched
livefromdarylshouse.com
(a MUST SEE, just music..cooking..and no frills)
a website featuring monthly episodes in which Hall teams up with contemporary artists as well as music legends to sing Hall and Oates hits and songs made famous by the guest musicians. The success of the series demonstrates the ability of Hall and Oates' music to continue to impact the genre of rock and roll decades after the initial release of their songs

here from the episode featuring PAT MONAHAN (Train) a legendary intepretation of WAIT FOR ME
