I was going to post something humourous and funny as always but after the news of the quake in Japan...well...I'll opt for a one day stop to pay respect 2 the victims and all those hit by this tragedy.

Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

Are we just talking about favourite artists? There seem to be some odd choices for 'under-rated'.

If we mean favourites, I'd have to reach back to my early youth and nominate
  • Dylan
  • Hendrix
  • The Beatles
as the three biggest game-changers of the modern era. None are under-rated though. They've received due recognition.

If we do really mean under-rated, I can think of a whole slew of singers and bands in that category, but by definition, not many of you will have heard of them, so not sure if there's any point in mentioning them. Of those you (Brits) willl/should have heard of, I'd say...
  • Lloyd Cole & The Commotions
  • Billy Bragg
  • Ewan McColl
As for over-rated... that's tough. There are plenty of musicians who leave me cold but I hesitate before saying that other people are somehow wrong to like them. That seems arrogant to me.

Must say, I don't understand the Susan Boyle phenomenon though. Seems like a lady with a decent voice whose success has massively over-reached her talent -- a bit like JK Rowling, in another genre.

Apart from SuBo... at a push, Prince...?

Can't think of a third.

I think the plan is for under/over rated rather than favourites/dislikes.

Not sure about your 1st choice for underrated but I understand your other two. I'm not particular fans of their stuff but can see they have been influential and unrecognised.

Ewan McColl should get recognition, if only for producing his daughter Kirsty.

Thanks for your post...by the way...just learned Llyoyd Cole will be in Zurich soon. Longtime I haven't heard about him. Can you recommend some nice new things he has written?

Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

For those who loves TH aka Tony Hadley i.e. the most powerful, flexible, deep and warm voice of pop...here it is the latest collaboration with an italian singer...
At the begininnig I was skeptical, 2 people more different that work together r almost impossible to find but...now I do really like it..it could be 'cos of the typical 80s sound with lots of keyboards, to the cool lyrics or... the presence of TH

btw...for all the nostalgic who wonder where heroes of the 80s has gone...this website is a real blessing!

I do hope as well but there's lack of participation by new members lately...

I hope the weekend will bring new contributors to avoid monologues or fanzines

Dude, thanks a lot for saying that.

Result = I guess it's whatever one so desires it to be...

PM me the infamous quote if it's anything other than complimentary.

Highly suspicious behaviour?! Man, please "excuse me while I touch the sky". So there!

TRUE FAITH - COMIC RELIEF announcement

GEORGE MICHAEL RELEASING A NEW SINGLE FOR CHARITY

The single, plus an instrumental version of the track as a b-side, will be available digitally on March 13 and physically on March 14. At 12:01 am on March 19, after the “True Faith” official music video has been premiered for Comic Relief, the single and video will be available for purchase as a bundle exclusively through iTunes. Check back to GeorgeMichael.com and Facebook for links to the songs as they become available!

On Red Nose Day, March 18, do something funny for money and change countless lives. Comic Relief spends all the money raised by the public to give extremely poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa a helping hand to turn their lives around.

Over the years, George has been the most tremendous supporter of Comic Relief. Out of the blue one year he gave us all the cash from the release of “As”, his single with Mary J Blige. Then he did a brilliant Little Britain ‘Lou and Andy’ sketch – which ended with the inevitable insult slung at him - “I don’t like him.” But most excitingly, he’s giving Comic Relief all the money from his new single, “True Faith”. It’s always so moving when people stick with us year after year – and we’re thrilled and delighted about the song, and the wonderful video that goes with it. We promise we’ll use every penny we make from it to save and change lives in Africa and all over the UK. –Richard Curtis, Vice Chair, Comic Relief

*At least 75p goes to Comic Relief from the sale of this CD. Comic Relief registered charity 326568 (England/Wales); SC039730 Scotland

Re: Most under/overrated band/singer

Here it is my number 3 most UNDERrated artist:

NIK KERSHAW

During the 80's, Nik had a string of hits including "Wouldn't It Be Good" and "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". He also enjoyed platinum status with his albums "Human Racing" and "The Riddle".

In the 90s, his success has continued, with the worldwide number one hit he wrote for Chesney Hawkes "The One and Only".

Since then someone may have lost his tracks but Nik kept on producing wonderful albums like
"15 Minutes" (1999) and "To be frank" two years later. Then "You have got to laugh" was released in 2006 and the acoustic collection (a real treat) "No Frills" saw the light in 2010.

With such an amazing career spanning over 2 decades his work needs to be re-assessed by the media.

For those interested in checking out his true value here it is an updated list of gigs scheduled for the remainder of the year (after the solo tour this time he will play with band):

Happy Days Festival, Surrey Sunday, May 29, 2011
Byparken Festiva, Denmark Thursday, June 02, 2011
John Dee Club & Pub, Oslo, Norway Friday, June 03, 2011
Rogafest, Norway Saturday, June 04, 2011
Rewind, Perthshire Sunday, July 31, 2011
Rewind Henley. Sunday, August 21, 2011
