I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

...Ticino. I can't, the OH works in Zurich, I dunno what I'd do there etc. But it just seem so much more "me". I find myself oggling Ticinoporn at times like this:

Do other people also wish they lived elsewhere in Switzerland?

Re: I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

I'm happy with Basel. Althought it is small it is a great location for trips to Germany and France and we have the river as well. I wouldn't mind trying out Luzern for a bit possibly, but I can't complain about where i am at the moment!

Nice picture by the way!

I'm also happy in Basel. Sometimes I wonder about changing jobs which, due to the fact Basel's so small, will probably mean changing cities, and it puts me off.

I like being able to cycle to Germany in 15 minutes and France in around 10. Plus Basel is quite multicultural and doesn't feel very "Swiss". However, almost every other place I've been to looks prettier.

Honestly...Bern. Everything just seems to make sense there. People, job market, atmosphere...very sensible. And, the architecture reminds me Prague. And it is cheaper than bloody Geneva.

Re: I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

Yeap - its Lausanne for me. Visited a friend who lives there last year and everything felt right. They have a great music conservatoire down there, my french is much more passable than my German and its the same distance as it iis from Zurich to hubby's work - hmmm so why havent I moved my arse?

I guess the grass is always greener on the other side

Yup, one of my favourites. It, with Schaffhausen are really small, but everything's there, well organised and very pretty. Most over hyped city in Switzerland? Luzern *ducks for cover*.

I definitely have to agree with that bit. I am sure that Basel is a very nice place but relative to most other towns in Switzerland it does look rather industrial.

If I do get to move to Switzerland, Lucerne would be my first choice. It has a small town feel with large city resources. The easy access to lakes, mountains and the rest of Switzerland are also great attractions there.

Second choice would be the old city area of Zurich, perhaps close to Niederdorf, for similar reasons to Lucerne.

Re: I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

Basel is a very liveable city - great to be close to the airport to get back to scotland every couple of weeks but I wish we were closer to Italy. I speak a bit of Italian (no french, no german) and would like to improve that instead of learn another language and I have family in Italy so would be nice to be closer to them.

I also would like nicer views of hills, trees, lakes - not necessarily right outside my window but as part of the city landscape.

If I had to choose based on the views and outdoor activities, it has to be somewhere in the mountains in Vaud/Valais such as Les Diablerets, Champéry, Crans-Montana, etc..

Ticino- Locarno or Bellinzona. Italian is a tad gentler on the ears than Schweizerdutsch.

Re: I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

i love my lausanne, though i could see living in bern too-its a beautiful city but there are too many really cool, expensive shops that would drive me crazy.

i think that ticino would be the place for me as well... love the weather, the people, the language and the culture is much more familiar to what i know...but hubbys job wouldnt allow it for us either, not yet anyway .

Re: I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

Another vote for Bern. That extra 45 minutes on the train to get to the mountains from Neuchâtel on a Sunday morning and back again in the evening really hurts sometimes... I like the atmosphere as well, the mixture of capital city and country town.

Re: I wish I lived in.... [Switzerland]

Ticino is truly a beautiful place, but I wouldn't want to live there. Nice that Switzerland is so small so it's easy to go to the south over weekends.
But Basel has come as close to a home as I could have wished. Great set of people, central so it's easy to travel around, and just nice in general.
