Calling the audio buffs!

Hi all,
I'm about to take delivery of a high end sound system (turntable, amp, power supply & speakers), and being a complete noob, I'm wondering if any audiophiles might be able to help me with a couple of questions:
1. For best sound, should my floor standing speakers stand on the parkett, or on slate tiles (another option I have heard).
2. Does forking out on expensive speaker cable with gold / silver cores etc. Make a lot of sense?
3. Does it make sense to put sand in the base of the speakers?

All advice great fully received

Jim

If you are a noob, none of those will cause any noticeable difference. Your speakers should stand on a soft mat to absorb vibrations either way. If you have bought a high end system, I am sure the cables will be of similar quality and match the Unit for specs. Manufacturers know best, if what you asked made any difference, wouldn't they tell you to do it in the manual ? You do not need to pimp a high end system. Chill and enjoy the music. Spend your pimpmyhifi money on some new CD's.

silver/gold cables - forget them. they are a waste of money and have no discernable sound benefit.

i know a few people who use spikes to raise the speakers off the floor and also to isolate/reduce vibration (adding a rubber grommet to put the spikes on). you'll probably need to test in the specific room to find the best positioning - which will probably be determined by the wife acceptance factor rather than optimal sound reproduction
