GenPet : the next toy ?

http://www.genpets.com/index.php

Say Hello to the all New Genpets™ from Bio.Genica!
The Genpets™ are Pre-Packaged, Bioengineered pets implemented today!

That’s right, Genpets are not toys or robots. They are living, breathing genetic animals.
We use a process called "Zygote Micro Injection" which is quickly becoming a favourable method to combine DNA, or to insert certain proteins from different species. Most notably it was used in 1997 to splice mice with bioluminescent jellyfish and has since been used to create glowing rabbits, pigs, fish, and monkeys . Since then, human DNA has been injected into rabbits, chimpanzees, spider DNA into sheep, and now, Genpets have arrived!
Read National Geographic's site for more information on human animal hybrids.
We’ve gone one step further by packaging the Genpets™ into plastic packages unlike any other. Each Genpet™ package has a fully functional heart rate monitor and Fresh Strip to better gauge the state of each pet while it lies in its hibernation state.

Re: GenPet : the next toy ?

That is one heck of an ugly thing..wow ..It creeps me out !

Thanks gawd its not for real.

"It's an ART PROJECT. They aren't real, they're just models made from plastic and wire.

"the web site Genpets.com puts on a good show of spoofing an outlet for the sale of "pre-packaged, bio-engineered pets," no such product exists. (One common giveaway: prospective buyers can't actually order anything through the Genpets store, with the excuse given that "Bio-Genica is still developing its connections and relations with resellers while we get the various approvals needed to sell Genpets worldwide.")

Like similar items we've been asked about, Genpets are actually artworks — in this case plastic and latex sculptures (including circuitry and robotics) created by 24-year-old Canadian commercial artist Adam Brandejs.""

Re: GenPet : the next toy ?

it would have been too easy on April 1st....

Now, our science will be once able to create those kind of creatures (and it's perhaps not too far away from now)

How will we react ? Are we going to buy this kind of stuff ?

I think it's an interesting question.

What do you think ?

That thing creeps me out, that is what i think about it.. no matter what price it is..

Btw wasn't that done in the early 90's with the Tamagotchi ?

Not that expensive, and longer life then 3 years..when it died, you could bring it back to life again (never had one but everyone around me did for some reason, i coulnd't see the fun of it )

I think the technology to create true hybrids is still years away, there are still multitude problems to overcome. There's a huge difference between injecting a single gene into another organism, to creating true hybrids with large sections of genome from genetically divergent species. It might well happen, but probably not in our lifetime.

Re: GenPet : the next toy ?

Not only the Tamagotchi was a " take care don't let it die thing", but also the Furby, does anyone remember these??

So the idea is not that mad, they did put the technology into toys during the passed years..
