I Need PC Help

Hi
Can anyone offer any tips or recommend someone to help save my old XP PC?
My PC picked up a virus, despite the protection installed. I ran another virus killing program, and now the PC won't boot, it gets to the Windows splash screen then shuts down again, and keeps repeating this cycle over and over.
I dont have the system disks...any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: I Need PC Help

Turn the machine on hold F8 on boot, try getting into safe mode and do a system restore.

On some machines, the recovery disks are built in.

Re: I Need PC Help

If you are convinced it is a virus, you will need System disks, or boot disks with AV software on. Clean boot off them and scan/disinfect your PC.

If it is software that is causing your PC to fail to boot, can you boot in safe mode and de-install all suspect software ? Or can you roll back using system restore, either in safe mode or clean boot mode ?

Failing that, put the hard drive in another system, preferably via a docking station, scan for viruses, disinfect and try to copy all your personal data off.

I would suggest reinstalling, but without system disks, that is a no no.
You could download and install Ubuntu , but at least make sure you salvage what you can of your personal data.

Backups ???

Hi,
Let's try to help you help us helping you

1) How do you know? also, a "protection" does not protect you entirely. Some virus are not recognized by the antivirus database definition and can be skipped.

2) Which one?

3) Finally, the "symptoms". We can start to help you- a bit like the doctor

4) Ok additional infos, we might not need them anyway.

So about 3):
It might not be a virus but let's suppose nothing.

Please start your PC in safe mode as the other user suggested, and try a system restore. Ideally a restore 1 or more day(s) before the symptoms described in 3) appeared.
Please let us know the results of that action, then we will try another approach.

Looks like one that I encountered a while back which was corrupting the MBR, if so it's a rebuild ground up.

Re: I Need PC Help

Thanks for all your help and suggestions - unfortunately no success...PC doesn't take any notice of F8 or F2 on boot just keeps on going...even pulling the mains plug when the windows splash screen appears can't trick it into doing a safeboot next time.

Oh well looks like I have an excuse to upgrade.

Shame about what I've lost though...but at least its only March so I havent lost too much since my last year end back up (annual is normal right?)

Depends on how much you're willing to lose in the event of failure, I would say once a month is more likely to be more useful.

Try F5 instead it's definitely one of the F keys that forces it into safe mode you should see a menu come up.

Take out the harddrive, put it into a USB disk caddy (a few 10s of CHF), recover your data onto another machine.

Simples.

Re: I Need PC Help

Try to get an XP System Rescue disk, try to roll back/System restore as far as you can go...All is not lost yet.

Re: I Need PC Help

I don't think you'll have lost anything. Take it to some professionals and they can get the data off your hard drive with not much problem and not much cost. It doesn't sound like you had any kind of mechanical problem with the hard drive so it should work without a problem. That is what I had to do when my last laptop died.

Annual backup? Wow. I do incremental backups regularly since the horrible experience of having a computer fail on me. It happens automatically, doesn't take much time and the peace of mind ... priceless.

Are you sure the keyboard is working?
Just boot again and click many many times on your F8 key until you reach safe mode menu,

Simples.
Even more simple: burn Knoppix or the like on a CD, boot from CD, copy files to external drive.

I have recovery disks from my old XP laptop but they are all "branded", i.e., they are for my old Toshiba. Not being a computer expert, I have no idea if they will help or not. If someone says they will, I'll send them to you.

They will work. At least in being able to do a system restore etc. BUT if they are configured to launch Toshiba rescue utilties they might reject the boot. They may be hardcoded to work with Toshiba gear if they are not standard boot disks. Certainly worth a try.

Do you move your backups offsite? ( I move mine into the nuclear bunker ).

It can't hurt. But the last time I tried such a thing, it didn't work because the first thing the disks did, after booting, was check the hardware and reject the installation!

I hope you take a full backup regularly too...not just incrementals, and I hope you test your rescue CD , and test your backups too. Blind faith in untested backups will only ever cause grief...

Better save your important files and clean install Window XP. This happened to me....or check your graphics.

Re: I Need PC Help

Before using any restore disks - attempt to get the data of the HD. Restore will often wipe the disk as the first step.

Re: I Need PC Help

sounds like it's blue-screening when loading something.

so boot from the OS installation disk and repair the installation.

You can also do a fixmbr and run sfc /scannow from the repair prompt if you're feeling plucky
