Greek Island for Couple

Hi Guys,

Maybe this is not the place to ask this question, but me and the Wife are thinking of spending a week on a Greek islan sometime this summer and we are looking for advice on what's the best island, in your opinion.

I have been told that some islands are more geared up to honeymoons/couples and a bit more laid back rather than full on Booze and sex singles paradise. So if anyone has got some advice on a nice chilled out island we'd be greatful for it.

Thanks

Re: Greek Island for Couple

I'd love to hear about this myself actually. We aren't really 'lay about all day' types though. We like to go for a swim in the morning, go out and see something interesting (like something archaeological) and then come back and go for a swim again.

Re: Greek Island for Couple

I really enjoyed Kos.

There are various archeological sites, some maintained and sadly some not to visit.

Kos town is full of nice restaraunts, the harbour, Hippocrates tree, Medieval castle, old ruins etc. You can also visit the Volcano Nisyros.

The north of the Island can be quite windy so go to Kos town or the south of the Island.

Many trips availabe to other Islands. I would def go again

I like Poros as it tends to be very peaceful and is also quite green. Added bonus is that you can easily do day trips to Athens from here too. If you've got the cash Hydra is nice, lots of 'big boy's toys' floating in the harbour there

Re: Greek Island for Couple

I suggest Patmos.

Great combination of sandy beaches, bars, restaurants, spiritualism (monastery of St. John and the cave where he wrote the Apocalypse).
Easy access to small islands nearby for daily trips. Sailing there is a great experience.
The town of Chora is the most beautiful town ever!
Small white houses, narrow alleys, the Monastery on top of the hill.

Have a drink at Astivi bar (built in 1673 I think) and you will feel blessed.

Re: Greek Island for Couple

Paxos in the Ionian is rather nice, been there a fair number of times.

Lakka is really especially nice, but if it all gets too much(!) you can flee for the day to Antipaxos.

To really get off the beaten track, head to Ithaca!

I'll second that.
Kos is so much fun !!
Stay around Kos Town though, the south of the islad is very pretty but becomes very very touristic, which is a bit of a shame. The surroundings of Kos Town is authentic.
It is the birth place of Hippocrates too (oops Kev already said it)
Also you can tour Kos Town on a bicycle. Most people rent a bike for the week and go everywhere.

Re: Greek Island for Couple

i've never been to kos but i am under the impression that it is too touristic?

my absolute favourite is skopelos.

crystal clear waters, trees up until the sea, brethtaking views...yoou can find quite remote beaches, but there still is some sort of nightlife.
for accommodation i recommend http://www.myspace.com/thenewurbanmusic i have been there three times, cheap and descent, in the heart of the harbour

paxi at the ionian see is also verey very nice for couples i think. i'm still tryng to find a way to reach this beach

last summer i went to ikaria. i really enjoyed it but you definately need to rent a car!

i also really liked amorgos and milos. oooh and lesvos!

still thinking about where to go this year myself.....anyone been to karystos or sifnos?

Unless I'm very much mistaken, that looks very much like Emerald Bay on Antipaxos, in which case you need to take a water taxi from Paxos, or better still take a sailing holiday in the Ionian

I love Skopelos! Absolutely nothing to do except relax! Somebody else suggested Santorini so can i say Zakinthos? We spend a week there and it was nice. Swim in the blue caves if you can. Unforgettable

Re: Greek Island for Couple

Most of the big islands like Kos etc... are full of kids hell bent on drinking, sex and more drinking. But depending where you stay and go out, these party animals can be avoided.

If you are looking for a greek island with alot less happening i would highly recommend Symi. Its a beautiful and very small island which has regular ferries to Rhodes.

I have spent alot of time sailing around the Turkish coast and the Dodecanese islands. The whole area is beautiful.

cheers
SC

Re: Greek Island for Couple

A lot of very good recommendations already. We liked Kos, avoid the tourist towns of Kardemena and Tingaki and it is quite unspoilt with ruins to visit especially around Kos town. Or you could take the ferry from Mastahari over to Kalymnos which is very quiet indeed.

Also visited Skiathos, Skopolos, Crete, Zakynthos, Lesvos and Cephalonia.

Any questions on any of these islands just ask.
