Re: Ladies, is there such a thing as "too big" when you give 'er one ?

I wouldn't have been happy with a big ring, because I'm a clutz, I lose things. So far in my 17 yrs marriage I lost my wedding ring twice! One down the heating vent and one in the backyard garden My husband is so dear, just replace them without a word, but I'd feel horrible if it were a big ol' diamond ring.

Re: Ladies, is there such a thing as "too big" when you give 'er one ?

BTW I never got an engagement ring- we were young and could not afford one. We didn't get a posh wedding either, or posh anything- and that was fine. No idea about your situation, but I feel too many people are 'pushed' to spend far too much on weddings they can't afford, and then are under huge pressure to pay debts. Just not necessary imho- unless you can afford it and that's great.

My parents were buried with the engagement rings my dad very carefully and skillfully twisted out of simple wire, as they didn't have any money either when they met - they meant the world to them and were taken to their graves.

Weddings are not about 'weddings' but about 'marriage' - a very different concept. Bonne chance.

Oh, and err on the side of bigger.

But in reality, CJ is quite petite so a huge rock will have her hand on the floor. And then it becomes tacky. And she isn't the type who flaunts, so she (probably) doesn't want a huge rock to show off anyway (not that all women who have huge rocks like to flaunt--I just know CJ personally and know she isn't like that).

Make it original, make it beautiful and she will love it...

Don't buy it in Switzerland for a start!
Take her to New York, let her choose it there and then enjoy a holiday too all for the same price
Bargain!

Re: Ladies, is there such a thing as "too big" when you give 'er one ?

agreed. take her on a trip to nyc to the diamond district-47th around 6th ave and the trip and the ring together will be much less than here and more memorable... if you cant do that i vote for a special day of you and her with visits to jewelers to see what she likes, get an idea of what kind of stones-settings she likes and then surprise her with something...hubby surprised me and honestly, it wasnt what i would pick initially for myself but it is, to me, more beautiful and special because he chose it himself for me. and actually it fits me quite well, there is nothing as romantic as a surprise...

Or.... take her to Istanbul to our jeweller (I am not related with the guy in any way, I have no financial interest or else.... just the interest of you having a good adviser, great choices and awesome prices ) and you could propose to her again with the ring to one of the best view in the whole town!

She'll remember the experience for ever! (And she can combine it with a good shopping experience too! )

So I let the lady choose and not surprise her ?
Within reason. I would at least get an idea of her taste. She is a big girl (metaphorically speaking) and i think its best to let her have something that she has an input in.

(personally i wanted something that i could still go mountain biking with )

Agreed, she is going to wear it for the rest of her life! (Inshallah)

So it is better to have a very good idea of what she likes or let her chose herself.

IF rings are beautiful and expensive - but you can't beat the quality.

There is also nothing wrong with a VVS1 or even 2, you'd never see the inclusions with the naked eye as long as the diamond isn't cloudy.

My vote is for the surprise ring, but I don't think you should let your budget limit you to IF rings if you can also get one you love that's a little more financially friendly but still really beautiful.

Agreed. Though CJ is from Essex and they like their bling, I am sure she wants her ring to be TASTEFUL - simple and classic. Something that is timeless. My friend got a yellow diamond recently from her fiance and even though they are the rage (apparently), I know alot of women will personally prefer a platinum solitare of a good quality diamond.

Personally, size of the rock doesnt matter. Its the quality of the diamond that counts. Make sure the colour is either D or E (E is really pushing it!!) Dont settle for anything less. Other than the carat, thats the C (cut, clarity, colour, carat) which is most visible to the untrained eye. My engagement ring is a D coloured, which hubby picked it out himself and because of its brilliance, it looks bigger than it should be.

Mine wasnt custom designed because I personally like a single solitare diamond but I know alot of girls would be over the moon if you added your own special touch to design it. It shows how much you know her.

My hubby took me shopping to pick my engagment ring, having experienced previous less than enthusiastic responses from me. He also told me I wouldn't get it wear it home. A few weeks later he surprised me with a special evening to give it to me.

Best wishes!

Of course, one can also first choose the diamond and then choose the ring it's set in afterwards

Flawless is OTT. Opt for an VS1 or better, something reasonably white (up to I) and go for a 1ct or 1.5ct depending on the money. VS1 is flawless for all intents and purposes. However I would approach a specialist jeweller and sit down and have this conversation with them.

A trip to Amsterdam, take a diamond factory tour, then have some input of the design. A good excuse to see some art exhibitions and have some Thai cuisine to boot!

Not specifically for an engagement ring but for a diamond to be set into another ring.
Was well worth the trip (although we did live in Brussels at the time) as they certainly know their diamonds there.

And yes there is such a thing as too big for rings. I agree with the others who said quality over quantity.

My husband surprised me with a ring he had designed himself, the fact he put so much thought into it makes it even more special. I loved it from the second he gave it to me and I don't think I could have choosen any better had I been given the choice.

Re: Ladies, is there such a thing as "too big" when you give 'er one ?

I am all for the design idea, but personally, the simplest design with brilliant cut diamonds in a 3/4 feet clasp or 1/2 moon clasp and a platinum band are hard to beat for me. There is a diamond shop/factory in Antwerp that offers a free overnight stay (4/5 star hotel for my ring budget), and the prices for the stones are generally 1/2 of Zurich prices. I would be a fool not to take this up. I can really improve on the colour and clarity for the same budget.

CJ is away for two weeks , so this thread will be long buried then Now to find an overnight babysitter for two 12 year olds and start checking flights.

Thanks all, the suggestions are most welcome.

P.S.

White mini wedding dress.....Phwoaar.
