BTW I never got an engagement ring- we were young and could not afford one. We didn't get a posh wedding either, or posh anything- and that was fine. No idea about your situation, but I feel too many people are 'pushed' to spend far too much on weddings they can't afford, and then are under huge pressure to pay debts. Just not necessary imho- unless you can afford it and that's great.

My parents were buried with the engagement rings my dad very carefully and skillfully twisted out of simple wire, as they didn't have any money either when they met - they meant the world to them and were taken to their graves.

Weddings are not about 'weddings' but about 'marriage' - a very different concept. Bonne chance.

Aww..my parents melted old coins to make their wedding rings. After 30 years they got new ones with diamonds and also because their fingers got too fat for the first ones.

Actually I'm waiting for Clarejane to start a thread about what kinda wedding dress she should wear.

The thing is they don't bury threads here.
In the oh so OffTopic section I think they disappear after a year or something like that. Thank God they do.
They don't disappear quickly enough, have been amused reading through this!

Never fear I will not be asking for Wedding dress advice, have an idea in my mind already and know what UTH likes and looks good on me

That ring is amazing!

Wrong, I'm specifically looking for one.

An Old European Cut Diamond, it looks very different from a modern princess cut and was hand cut using diamonds rather than modern techniques.

It gives a different look and doesn't shout bling like modern diamonds. It's what her indoors wants and I shall find. Well when I eventually do, these things are like rocking horse poo. They have to be split from existing rings then I'll get a mount made.

I suppose all my fault with a very old friend who was a jeweller, I shouldn't have told her what to look for and how much choice she can have. If you wanted a "d" in this stone at 2ct you'd be talking 5 figures btw min, they just don't exist and those that have them won't sell them.

Until then I got her a "placeholder" that she wanted, its concentric circles of diamonds to 1ct, which luckily for her she can wear on the other hand as a "dress" ring when I eventually source this nuisance of a diamond.
TMI, seriously

Re: Ladies, is there such a thing as "too big" when you give 'er one ?

My husband and I chose my ring together and there was an option for a larger diamond or medium sized diamond in the setting we picked. He asked me which I wanted and I chose the medium one, but if he had sprung for the larger one and surprised me I certainly wouldn't have minded. And then I could have blamed the excessiveness on him.
