Should I buy this used motorcycle?

Hello all !!!

I came across this ad,on the internet for a used,
Kawasaki Ninja,
1997 model,
500 cc,
5000 km done. (yes, 5000 only)
Price is 1,000 CHF or best offer.
see attached photos

The motorcycle is in Zug.
I am , and will be ,in Basel.

I have been living in Basel, with my wife , since 18 months.
We plan to use it mostly for weekend rides, to the adjoining cities and countries.(say 300 km away).

I have never ridden a motorcycle before, in switzerland.
I have always been riding one back home,in India.

I am going over tomorrow, just to have a look.
Then, if I like it, and you like it , will go ahead and buy it, in the following few days.

I do like the way these 90's motorcycles look.
Sorry, there's no pic showing the number-plate, if that's important.

What are your thoughts, suggestions please?
What all do I need to do, keep in mind?
Is it too old?
Isn't 1000 chf too much?
(a new one, at that time, costed 5,000chf).
Give me some tips, bitte.
anything ?!!
Really !!

Would YOU buy it?

Thanks for your help and time, BOYS !!!

Re: Should I buy this used motorcycle?

Bike looks nice, price seems low, not high.

Do you have a license for it?

I have an '85, '86, '92, '98, and two '03 bikes (all Italian except the '92 XV250), '97 is not too old.

A friend of mine has a Kawasaki 750 (I think also Ninja) he bought new in '86, with 90k km, still runs great.

Re: Should I buy this used motorcycle?

Hmmm, Thanx , Tom.
sounds good.
Yes, I do have a license, it has a small motorcycle figure on it on it's rear-side.
Have yet to decipher it. will use EF and the net to figure that out.

A1, or A?

A1 is only up to 34 PS, A is unlimited.

OK, A is great, i.e. unlimited.

If you take the highway, it's three hours, longer (and more fun) if you don't, but most of the passes are closed until June. However, let me know if you come down, I can show you some nice roads.

Re: Should I buy this used motorcycle?

You get the grey card from the seller, find an insurance (or go to the people that do your car insurance, if you have one), then go get the plates from the motor-vehicle office.

They'll send you the bill in the mail.

Re: Should I buy this used motorcycle?

Watch out for eventual problems stemming from being stored too long. 5000 km over 12 years is very little. The bike has probably been parked for long periods, which can cause all kinds of problems.

Re: Should I buy this used motorcycle?

seems way too cheap, so I guess it has no MFK, that would be the first thing to check.

yes, the bike has definitely been parked for a long period. what problems should I expect? I did think about this, but also thought it would'nt be too big a thing.
Any luck with selling your Yamaha?

All moving parts will likely be affected, especially anything that has to do with the fuel system. The carbeurators will likely be gummed up (expensive dirty job), the tank may be rusty, etc. Check for rust everywhere, check all rubber housings for cracks. If there is rust outside, there may well be more that you can't see inside.

And the Yamaha is still up for grabs (due to my total laziness on the advertsing front...)

Re: Should I buy this used motorcycle?

Good decision, that amount of km's probably means it hasn't been serviced, which means 13+ years of sludge in the oil etc...
