US Summer Camp for 8year old... Suggestions?

Would like to send my 8yo boy to America for a 1-2week residential summer camp, ideally around NY. This will be the first time we will do this. So complete newbie. We are looking for anything that will keep him occupied/outdoor and give a sense of independence and community.

Any suggestions or advice from parents who have done similar?

Thank you.

Would he be travelling on his own? I haven't done anything similar with my child but I think if it were my son, I would either wait until he was a bit older or go with him. A transatlantic flight followed by a stay at a camp on another continent in another timezone might be a bit much at 8 years old.

Of course, your son could be very mature for his age but you would only be the best judge of that.

Wow, you must have a very independent and confident 8-year-old already, if you're contemplating a summer camp on a different continent! How about starting off with a camp on the other side of Switzerland - assuming that's where your family will be based during that time?

Our kids really enjoyed their week at Village Camp in Geneva last year - really professionally run with a lovely bunch of staff and a nice mix of kids. It was a day camp, but they run residential camps as well. More details at www.villagecamps.com. It's not cheap, but I couldn't fault them - and would probably work out well if you compare including travel.

Just looked, and they do a Junior Camp for 7-9 year olds as well.
