I doubt it. My sister for example is about twice as good at hunting down a bargain as I am. Her investments have on average also done better than mine.

Maybe the girls throw out more money on clothes and shoes but when men have a hobby it's often an expensive one, be it a classic car or a needlessly over-engineered audio surround. I guess it must average out somehow.
that's very true. cars, bike, gadgets, hifi. all very expensive!

Actually, my mum follows this logic too. Anything that has been reduced or has a special offer when she wouldn't have bought the thing at the same price if it wasn't 'on offer'.

but she can't help her background, upbringing and national characteristics.
actually, i read something about Mediterranean versus Germanic attitudes to saving. it basically went something like "in mediterranean countries, food is plentiful and people didn't need to save for the winter and could just live for today. in other countries people had to work during the summer and harvest to ensure they had enough to live through the winter".

i also remember seeing and advert about german pensioners versus spanish pensioners and it had a relatively well off german pensioner enjoying his retirement c.f. a poor spanish one. and then there was a flashback to younger times with the german working and the spanish guy drinking and cavorting with women.

Re: Are women bad with money?

I believe that money is not the only resource that has value.

I have often disagreed with my better half over such things as whether it's worth spending 1 hour travelling to IKEA and 3 hours walking through the store when all she wants to buy is a Prokr Astinatar when the Migros equivalent (albeit a slightly different shade of pale yellow) is only 20 franks more expensive and I can stop off on the way home from work and be in and out of the store in 10 minutes. Especially seeing that after spending those 3 hours walking through IKEA my better half will have selected various additional items that weren't part of the plan and that we will never use (but just look as if maybe we might) and will so have more than negated the supposed savings.

i can never grasp the horror of this concept, but sometimes i suspect that some people (women especially) actually enjoy shopping!

Sounds good to me. You're not going to do much covorting once you're retired. Might as well enjoy it while you can and hope you die before you retire.

Incidentally, I remember reading a few years ago that a good percentage of Brits cited "The National Lottery" as their retirement plan.

Ikea v's Migros thing.. time value of money.. etc etc
yeah..
Ikea is like that.. their marketing strategy is about "hey, you know, we could really use one of those.. i've never seen it before in my life, but i really need it."

The Shopping Experience.

Men= hunt and kill
Women= graze and collect type shopping..

Then there are those of us who are genetically challenged.

This is a bit of a generalisation, but it seems that men seem to save more and build up assets. For example, the single guys I know have savings, shares and have bought a house etc. whereas a lot of the single women I know tend not to invest/save but go on more holidays etc.

I remember when my sister went off to Uni and soon afterwards we saw huge credit card bills come back and in the end had to bail her out. Even now, she spends almost all her cash on shoes, clothes holidays and going out.

Is this a normal trend? Or are women being more coy and keeping their shoe and handbag funds hidden away?
Generalizing crap post removed.

Not in my relationship. If I hear the words "let's sit down and make a budget" once more I'm going to quit cleaning the bathtub with the 1968 Petrus

When I had a cat, it only liked Felix meat chunks in gravy. It always looked as if it would be fabulous in a pie. I suspect that manufacturers deliberately aim to make the food look appitising to the owners.

I think pet food in UK has to be fit for human consumption too. I should have tried it.

Yes, this is true. I'm very careful with money.
And yet I'm not materialistic at all. I couldn't care less about objects.
I think we're good at savings and sticking to a tight budget.
