Are women bad with money?

This is a bit of a generalisation, but it seems that men seem to save more and build up assets. For example, the single guys I know have savings, shares and have bought a house etc. whereas a lot of the single women I know tend not to invest/save but go on more holidays etc.

I remember when my sister went off to Uni and soon afterwards we saw huge credit card bills come back and in the end had to bail her out. Even now, she spends almost all her cash on shoes, clothes holidays and going out.

Is this a normal trend? Or are women being more coy and keeping their shoe and handbag funds hidden away?

Re: Are women bad with money?

No.

I'd be willing to put money on the fact that as rule it's the other way around.

Re: Are women bad with money?

I doubt it. My sister for example is about twice as good at hunting down a bargain as I am. Her investments have on average also done better than mine.

Maybe the girls throw out more money on clothes and shoes but when men have a hobby it's often an expensive one, be it a classic car or a needlessly over-engineered audio surround. I guess it must average out somehow.

Re: Are women bad with money?

I don't see how this could be a gender thing...

I am very good with money and I actually find it difficult to spend it. I lived most of my adult life having none and finding difficult to see the end of the month, I am very careful.

I had a boyfriend who didn't help me to get better financially as he was the one having holes in his pockets because money always burns his fingers... It was a real pain. I am very glad that my husband is so good at saving, investing and calculating, etc. We never ever argue over our finance!

I wish I could just go in a store and spend hundreds on a pair of shoes or a piece of clothes, but I feel too guilty and because I know how hard work it always been for me to get that money.

I agree with Carlos. If anything it's the girls that are better with money.

Definitely a generalization... I am very good with money. And I think it is just a matter of how you were raised and what is important to you. Some people just generally plan well for the future (ie-savers) while others would rather live in the moment (ie-spenders). Priorities change as you get older (yada yada) but I think it is a personal preference and not gender specific at all.

Sometimes it really does make sense to buy 2 (and more) when it is half the price!

Re: Are women bad with money?

Man and woman think and operate differently,
maybe we (woman kind) also want to enjoy our lives now, the present is important, and unless u believe in reincarnation then
to do what my husband dose and just plan the old age, is really point less.
i will not say "dont worry be happy..." but i will say anything in moderation.
ho, and it might take us some time to learn that.

HI All,

Not all women spend their free time shopping for clothes and shoes - some have more interesting (and sometimes more expensive) hobbies.

Re: Are women bad with money?

A lot of women including myself spend a lot of money and time on how they look because they feel that they have to do this to be "good enough". Also, women often earn less and since men no longer are taught that they should look after women, it's not an ideal situation. But my mum is definitely better with money than my dad...

Re: Are women bad with money?

I always assumed women were better with the money, that's why they're always going on holidays, and I could never afford them....

I'm better with my cash now than I when was younger, which is something.

Re: Are women bad with money?

I can't generalise, but only relate to what (those) I know.

When I first met my wife (in a third party country) she had a very good salary, plus overseas allowances and subsidies, but hardly had a bean put away. She was, however over-insured and over-pensioned.

She had also bought much for her immediate family (sisters, nephews, nieces) - up to and including a piano, in one instance.

She'd flown one sister and family (total 4), long haul, to visit.

General shopping was done at the more expensive stores, just because they were more convenient, than travelling to the cheaper ones.

With my influence - practical and logical - we were able to use our financial resources better, have an equal quality of life, and still be able to save. Needless to say major expenditure had to be curtailed.

She still buys things on sight, instead of waiting for or looking for an equivalent bargain; she still fritters away on lots of silly, worthless (IMO) things for the kids, instead of pooling this money and buying something bigger, better and more worthwhile (but overall cheaper) ..... but she can't help her background, upbringing and national characteristics.

Agree 100%

As a woman, I love spending but I also love saving. I try to strike a balance between how much I spend and how much I save. I'm not going to live like a pauper just so that I can have a huge savings but I'm also not going to live beyond my means.

*BIIIZZZZZ*
Wrong!
180 degrees wrong!
Totally disagree!

In fact many of the men I have been romantically linked to have all been worse at handling money than me.
One (marketing) guy had a student debt, fancy stereo (which he thought was an "asset?!"), rented an expensive penthouse flat, burnt out the visa. So he got a higher paying job.. you know what he did? Instead of increasing the payments on his debt, he went out and bought himself a set of skis with a matching ski-suit(!) He had been skiing all of Once!
That was the end! After that I stuck with engineers. Go with what you know.
