iPhones and iPads secretly track your location and store your profile...

According to the guardian does your phone store a profile of your movement in a hidden file... which is synced to your PC.

Jesus, that's gonna cause a stink...

If it is true, I am binning my iPhone and iPad, it's simply outrageous that I am spied upon.

Can employees query employers phones I wonder...

My new iPad is registered to upthehatters's real identity so I'm sort of fine with it all.

Erm... the other way around: If economistos iPad is registered on your name Apple would think that his movement profile would be you - do you see any "special" ads targeted at you lately?

Apparently they don't use GPS for that but the 2G/3G cell_id & wifi access point. I checked in the Terms & Conditions and it states that the user allows/accepts geolocalisation data to be collected and shared with 3rd parties (art 4.b). No way to opt out ...... Evil!

Trick is that you can write whatever you want in the terms and conditions: If it's against privacy laws, it remains illegal. There was quite some drama when google collected info on wireless networks when driving around with their streetview cars. I personally think this case is on a totally different level - If it turns out that Apple is really collecting and analyzing this data, my next phone will not be an Apple anymore.

If they anonymize the data (remove IMEI, device serial number, IMSI, etc...) data then it could be considered as legal. What is really shocking is it's done without informing clearly the customer about data collection and also that there is no way to opt out.

don't worry. steve will soon be on stage to explain why this is really good for you and why android doesn't have this cool and unique feature.

the apply fans can then lap it up and swoon and we will be back to usual service.

I don't think so. there are plenty of ways this thing could be misused: Having stored a file on my computer with my movements without me knowing it?

- I know plenty of people who have itunes on their work machines. So their employers in fact have now all the data where their employees have been.

- This opens the door for spying at family members: You know, from divorce cases to helicopter parents... it just goes too far.

- If I get my phone stolen, it contains my private movements... I guess plenty of celebrities now need to shield their iphones from tabloid paid pick-pockets... remember when Paris Hilton got her phone stolen? Back then people were happy about some photos and plenty of phone numbers. Now it just got far worse.

- ...

Honestly, I am not exactly one of the "privacy freaks" that complain about every detail of google or Apple services. I know that I volunteer to give up a bit of privacy every time I use their products and in the case of google basically pay them through that. But this one goes far further and has been done secretly. I remeber once discussing with my colleagues how they push their terms and conditions through - on the iphone you got the option to browse through a 3 digit number of pages or simply push "accept"... and this stands at the end, so nobody in his right mind has possibly read it on the phone. I hope Apple gets into hot water for this.

I know it's a terrible thing they've done, but first thing I'm doing tonight is checking out my data, it looks really cool. I'd probably enable such a service, given the choice, and it was solely for my own use.

It's going to make apple look bad for sure, bad apple. If they're smart, they'll remove it.

Re: iPhones and iPads secretly track your location and store your profile...

mmmmmm, An old copy of the data shows, nothing my mobile phone provider/wife doesn't already know about me: I live in Basel :

iphones-ipads-secretly-track-your-location-store-your-profile-map.jpg

The data is a bit out of date. (but then I started deleting this file once this problem was shown last year)

Those of you with a mac, may want to download iPhoneTracker:

http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/

to see where you have been

yes, but if you had read it and it was made explicit to you, wouldn't you have accepted it anyway?

I don't care what Mr Jobs is looking at. I care that there is a hidden record with all the info where I have been when.

"Why do you care unless you have something to hide?" has been the default argument from any dictatorial regime in history. We know what they did with the inferior technology they had back then. At some point it really starts to get a bit 1984 for me... Privacy is my right and I have a right to know what data about me is stored where. As soon as I know I can then decide weather or not I use an Apple phone. Hiding it deep in the 50000 word terms and conditions and hiding the info so well that nobody found it in the past three years gives me the impression that they know that they are doing something many would not agree to. An honest approach would be to make it optional.

apple isn't exactly a regime now is it

come on 1984! a bit dramatic don't you think? what do they want this info for? so one day they may use it to sell targeted advertising, there is nothing the mobile phone operators don't collect and store anyway

its in the t&c's, so not hidden, is it there fault people don't read it??

Re: iPhones and iPads secretly track your location and store your profile...

There is no privacy in the western world. Forget it. The moment you have a sim card connected to any phone your location is transparent, the moment you log onto the internet, your details can be traced. We're not quite in Orwell's 1984, but we're pretty damn close.

If you want mobility, ease of communication and data on the go, you expose your whereabouts constantly in real time. And you know why? Because it's what society wants for everyone, just not for ourselves.

exactly, and if you really want to be anonymous that's when 'they' will really start to take notice of you

Do you have an iPhone? Have you seen how the t&cs are presented to you? Yes, it is Apple's fault: The t&cs are massive, literally 50 thousand words. That's a book if you would print it. Writing anything in there is a legal matter, but not and open communication to their customers.

I am not saying that Apple is a regime. I am saying that they make a hidden profile of my movements on my PC. Any regime that wants to has so the tool to control me better. Concrete example: The German police had a long discussion and by now has a "federal troyan" - an "official" computer virus they can use to spy on terror suspects' PCs. How convenient is it to have his movement history on that PC!
From there it is really not that hard to see how the same thing that might be good in the hands of one country fighting terrorism can get pretty quickly into a tool that helps less friendly countries suppress people.
I think that a record of your position stored over years is an absolutely breach of trust for me. I am an Apple fan, I have a Mac, iPhone, iPod... and my next pc will be a Mac again. My next phone? Not so sure.
