The order of the garter is just an excuse. The royal family make up the rules as they see fit. The queen came to the throne because her uncle had to abdicate for marrying a divorcee. However when it came to Charles she changed the rules so that he could marry Park er Bowels. Perhaps iif the crowd is lucky they might throw a few scraps off the balcony to the homeless
This is utter bollox
Edward VIII abdicated because Parliament threatened to walk out believing the people would never accept such a marriage.
Charles has a morganatic marriage, meaning that Camilla can never be Queen (and also isn't a Catholic or an American) Edward VIII also proposed such a solution but it was rejected.
No rules were changed

I can understand why Blair and Brown weren't invited; they turned an economically successful and independant and proud nation into an EU lapdog, recession-paralysed shithole. Or something like that.

Major and Thatcher were invited as they are both Knights of the Garter and I think Major was appointed the princes' official guardian when Diana died.
Yeah yeah yeah and the Tories would've done everything completely different. And Britain would be the only country not involved in the Global Economic Crisis.
Anyway, I was wondering what Ken Clarke was doing skulking behind the choiristers.
I reckon he must've sneaked in. Don't see why he'd be invited and not Blair. To me it looks like the Royal Family sticking close to the right wingers. And when anyone says it was a private wedding not a state one, why were there so many foreigner heads of state? Hmmm, 'Who cares?' is probably the best answer.

I took the afternoon off to watch it and while I'm not particularly fussed about the disfunctional family it did fill me with a bit of British pride. And seeing the Lancaster flying majestically overhead was the cherry on the cake.
Will and Kate didn't seem wrapped up in each other much on the balcony. Not much chat between them. I guess that's decorum. But a lip reader told ITV that after the first peck, William was whispering to Kate, "One more kiss.....one more.....one more." That's kind of sweet. :-)
Also not sure if Kate's dress was trumped by her sister Pippa's.

But Ed Milliband was there. I think I saw him blink at least once.

I thought the front of Kate's dress looked so long, she might trip up while her dad was walking her up the aisle.
He looked the spitting image of Norman Wisdom. Imagine if they'd fallen over, his first words would have been, "Mister Grimsdale, Mister Grimsdale."

Charles has a morganatic marriage, meaning that Camilla can never be Queen
I'm not sure that's correct PlantHead. I thought that morganatic marriages had to be enabled by legislation and in Charles' and Camilla's case the legislation was never passed so she assumes all Charles' titles. Legally Camilla is Princess of Wales but chooses not to style herself as that for obvious reasons. On Charles's coronation she can become Queen if she and Charles wish it (and I guess the PM at the time give it the green light). Charles is reported to be hoping that the public's acceptance of her will mellow so she can use that title.

OOO interesting. I thought it was official that she couldn't be titled Princess, could never be Queen and had no claim to the throne. I didn't realise it wasn't ratified by Parliament.
Future constitutional crisis ahoy!

Very true---but in reality The Queen or The Gov. General don't say much or contribute close to anything. Hence the PM is ESSENTIALLY the head of state.
If only! Unfortunately, the Queen (through her representative, the Governor-General) has real power. Just look at what happened in Australia in 1975 (ironically, on Remembrance Day). Her powers have been scaled back a bit as a result of that debacle, but she could still climb into the ring if she wanted to ...

You mean thank God the Monarchy has power, or are you advocating a dictatorship?

Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?

It was a beautiful wedding.
The British really know how to put on an elegant show.
So reserved, so quietly lovely.

Am so looking forward to the Queen's 60 years of reign next year (right ?)

Er, no. I'm definitely not a fan of any British monarch wielding power in Australia, or in any other country independent of Britain. Nor am I advocating dictatorship (which looks rather similar to monarchy, to me). Fortunately, there's a third option: democracy.

Yes, Bess took over the family firm upon the death of her father on 6 February 1952. However, she wasn't coronated until 2 June 1953, so expect another wave of celebrations in 2013.

This will be Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. If memory serves correctly, "diamond" was reserved for the 75 year anniversary (of whatever), but Queen Victoria decreed that her 60th year of reign would be celebrated as her diamond anniversary -- presumably fearing that she wouldn't make it to 75. (Correctly, of course, young though she was at accession to the throne.)

Just a thought - maybe you are HIM that should be? Maybe the sheep farmer, born in 42, has retired in CH! In which case best regards to your sister- who taught in a very ordinary comprehensive school in Leicester, without ever mentioning her ancestry and title.

Many thanks! I'd pass on your wishes ... if I had a sister. (Born in '42?! I know the sun ages people, but I'm not THAT old ...)
