Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?

Maybe some of you are convinced the royal family are there to amuse the tourists? Maybe you forget that our Queen is president for life, and her grandson is getting married to Kate, who might be Queen after Charles dies.

After watching the antics of the past and present presidents of France, Italy and USA I am quite happy with the royals. Usually they keep their trousers on in public!

The royal family are incorruptible, and today offer good value for money. (Apart from Lady Fergie)

I will not be watching the whole ceremony, but I will be happy to see the highlights. It is a public holiday in UK, many have the day off work.

I would not regard State President Sarkozy as corrupt, neither US president Obama or Italian State President Giorgio Napolitano

As a United States citizen, I couldn't possibly care any less about the royal wedding. However, since I only have 1 English language television station and it is some form of CNN with a bunch of British announcers, I am forced to watch all sorts of news about the silly wedding and the silly royal family who doesn't have any importance at all to the world. Can someone please explain to me why you care about the royal family and royal wedding? It seems so so meaningless in every way yet seems to be dominating the media (even on US news websites).

By the way, I recognize that the US media is obsessed with celebrity gossip crap as well, but I also think that is silly. However, everyone believes that this is silly even if they are interested.
The "form of CNN" you have here happens to be
CNN LONDON

I don't share the OP's feeling (I'll happily watch the wedding I am not afraid to admit) but I am a bit puzzled why some of you seem so defensive. I read "cultural identity" above and fair enough. But cultural identity is often the object of derision when it comes to other cultures.
It is not the first time this happens when British royalty is being discussed on this forum. Is it such a taboo subject?

I am sorry, but I don't understand your Queen's English. What do you mean by "Cultural identity", we are subjects of the Queen and citizens of the UK, we don't have identity or cultural problems, we know whom we are.

I'll add "british royalty" to the list of EF controversial topics (minaret, religion, salary, rep system, middle.east, etc...).

As long as people understand the distinction between "the royal family" and "the monarchy". They frequently get used interchangeably, which causes a lot of unnecessary confusion.

She is head of state, but that is purely figurative. She has no political power at all. If she tried to exercise her notional powers, e.g. by refusing to ratify a law, then that would trigger a constitutional crisis, and would be the end of the monarchy.

Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?

I only continued to read this thread in its entirety because I was bored.... and I still am. The usual Brit crap US rules the world trash is getting more often than KFC on this forum except the latest attempt at a wind up has displayed the OPs total incapacity to use any type of fact or data to back up an unimpressive OP. So In fact OP, if you don`t like the Royal Family then change the channel back to your usual Cartoon time and stop wasting my time.

It's a bit like asking an American, why they're into what they call "football", or baseball, when the majority of the rest of the world don't give a damn.

I would suggest that there's more of a global interest in the British Royal Family with it's associated pomp and ceremony, that has evolved over hundreds of years, then in a World Series, where the rest of the world (bar one?) is excluded.

Anyway, guv', it's always good to see a proper class system in action.

@TiMow: sports and ridiculous government spending on frivolities have nothing to do with each other. Plus, the British can’t talk about silly sports.

@Mikey: the British revolutionized the art of paparazzi, so I don’t understand your comment.
To clarify, I was merely trying to draw a parallel (as I believe Mikey was), to show how events such as these - and peoples enthusiasm towards them - can be part of the national psyche, and don't necessarily warrant or require an explanation.
It is irrelevant if "outsiders" understand this or not.

Where this (these) illustration(s) break(s) down, though, is that the appeal of the above traits of US psyche, tend not to transcend beyond the country's borders, whereas the ceremonial tradition and historical relevance of many things British has a truly global appeal.

I'm so excited by this wedding. Can't wait to endure countless pieces of trivia that will avert my eyes from 17'000 dead in Japan, the continuing war in Libya and no doubt some other teenage video game player living out his deathwish fantasy in smalltown America with real victims.

Media world save my soul from the harsh realities of being with some close ups of cockney pensioners wearing commemorative royal lingerie lining The Mall waving Union Jacks....... "We've been queuing here, reserving our spot since our Diana's funeral you know", says Beth (aged 76) ......."She was the true Queen of Hearts" she adds, quite.....

Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?

I'm American, now living in the UK, and find the whole thing fascinating. More so the reactions of the people, the effort spent to get everything just right, etc. I just wish our neighbors would hold a street party - I'd love to see (and be a part of) something so typically British from days past.

I remember when Charles and Diana married, my mother was glued to the TV in the US.

From what the media here is showing of American stations and their coverage of the wedding, they care more about it over there than here in Britain. Promos shown show such glee, excitement and reverence for it all in a way that Americans can only do (which means I cringe when they show snippets the news reports here from the US, they're so cheezy).

Examples:

And the stuff I've seen on the TV here from over there is even more over the top, but I didn't bother to search enough to find it.

In other words - Americans are just as obsessed with it (I think more so) than Brits. You should do a search here to find out more about TV providers in Switzerland so you can get some more English language stations
