Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?
If Americans do not secretly want to be part of the British Empire, why are they taking such an intense interest in the event? Do they take the slightest interest in any other Royal wedding? How about Sweden? There are millions of americans with swedish roots & dear old Carl-Gustav's daughter just got wed. No ... nothing.

They're just jealous .
Unlike me .
I don't think that many Americans are really taking that much of an interest in the event. I certainly don't know any that are. The media does not always accurately reflect public interest. Besides, you should know that the media is always desperate for something to focus on... but rarely seems to focus on what it should.
People I know back in the US think this is wonderful.
Tacky tacky tacky tacky tacky.
(then again, I hated the original dance down the aisle video that inspired this)
I completely agree, the first video was a ridiculous publicity stunt and this one is mildly blasphemous at best in my opinion. It is not funny at all and I just can't believe the 1000s of people that apparently love it (or even think it is the real deal or a rehearsal).
Without comparing the merits of soccer, Canadian Football (is there really a team called the Alouettes) and Aussie Rules the advantage of the Sydney Carlton game (Eurosport 2 at 11:30) is that it is on at the same time as the Royal Wedding and is therefore a viable alternative.

It seems like the perfidious republican ingrates are more obsessed with this wedding than anyone else.
I am a staunch royalist, but I haven't seen a single television programme about the wedding. I haven't read a single newspaper article about the wedding. I haven't listened to a single radio report about the wedding. Living in Switzerland, it's quite easy to avoid knowing anything at all about the wedding.
If you think you're getting too much of it, turn off your telly, turn off your radio, chuck your English language newspapers in the bin and go for a walk.
You're in Switzerland now, not bloody Windsor.
If only that were true. I dutifully watch the SF news at 19:30 most nights (as far as I can tell this is a legal requirement if you live here) and twice in the last few nights there's been a piece on the bloody wedding. Come Friday SF are devoting 6 hours of programming. At least I can have my TV firmly off on Friday but what can I do about guerilla items on the Swiss news?
Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?
As long as people understand the distinction between "the royal family" and "the monarchy". They frequently get used interchangeably, which causes a lot of unnecessary confusion.
care to explain and elaborate? Which one is important and why.
I'm not saying either is important or unimportant. They both exist, but they mean different things. The monarchy is the institution that's been around for a thousand years, give or take the odd century, and is a concept that we can argue about as being worthwhile or not.
The royal family is the current queen and her kids and various off-shoots -- many of them regarded as disreputable (rightly or wrongly).
Quite often, people will argue against having a monarchy by pointing to a particular member of the current royal family. Or they may like a member of the family, and conclude from that 'the monarchy is a good thing'.
I personally think its a great thing, especially since people up and down the country are planning street parties and the nation gets a day off...all for a nice, fluffy occasion (as opposed to a national tragedy).
Dunno about you, but I'm keeping my eye on the Duke of Edinburgh.

That wouldn't make her the only tit in the house though...
Too true, he he - but hey, this is history in the making here. This event alone will bring joy to many millions of people worldwide (even in America; my mother has a very old American friend who has a group of staunch royalist pals who will be celebrating in style, as they do every royal event).
For those of you who are not interested ... don't tune in

Yup.. as she said.
I seriously prefer a bit of joy, pomp and pretty circumstances once in a while than thinking about all the misery in the world I can not possibly do a thing about (as in make a real difference).
The world is as it is, with or without a nice fairytale wedding
Re: Royal Wedding....Can someone explain why you care?
The bigger royal fans started camping out last night on the London pavements, to be sure of a good viewing place on Friday morning. Starting at 5 am they were rewarded with a full rehearsal by 1,000 troops. I don't remember any such shows of loyalty for any US president. Now BBC Entertainment (It used to be BBC Prime) has a count-down clock, at top right on the screen, reminding us there are "2 days to go".
