the new mini cooper s

Apart from being hideously over priced, tell me about them, good, bad etc

mini's web site is frankly a joke, lots and lots of options without actually telling you what they are, oh right, I'm supposed to just know what mini radio boost option is am I??

so pricing aside, anyone got one? what options are a must have?

Re: the new mini cooper s

I'm keeping a beady eye on the new Cooper SD, all the thrills of the petrol 'S' but with 65 mpg The only thing missing would be a dual clutch auto gearbox (similar to VAGs DSG).

Is this the car you have ordered?

What about the "chili" pack?

Re: the new mini cooper s

The mini cooper or S was on my list of possibles a couple of years back. I rented one for 4 days in the UK to see how it was. The suspension was so hard I nearly needed a kidney transplant at the end. I didn't buy one.

Highly priced with very high residuals. The lowest depreciation of all cars AFAIK...

May not be as much a concern on Swiss roads though

Re: the new mini cooper s

Great fun on windy roads, perfectly acceptable cruiser / bigger sized car feeling on long trips. I used to drive the 2nd gen Cooper Cabrio which felt very solid. You'll want the 'S', as the Cooper alone doesn't have enough grunt and sits in the shadow of the Clio Sport for the giggle factor. Having made numerous trips to the Piedmont in both, I'd plum for the Clio, although admittedly not quite the same thing as the Mini. If you're not concerned about Machismo, you'll be fine. Excellent customer care, too.

Get a John Cooper Works version, I see one in Zug quite often. It the model with the rear seats removed, cool roof spoiler and special wheels - nice

I drive a Mini Clubman Diesel - it's great for around town, getting to and from work, parking in places that others cannot reach, loading in the dry cleaning andshopping bags, the occasional dog and other bits and bobs. Uses 6.0 liters / 100 kms.
Don't ask me any details about the engine - haven't got a clue.
Options: sun roof

Because you'd have to sell your kidneys to finance the speeding tickets?

Re: the new mini cooper s

I have a 2007 Cooper S.

New ones are very overpriced even with discounts. The warranty package is not the same as BMW, so it is actually even more expensive than you think.

I spent a long time looking at autoscout for a private sale and got one at a relatively good price. Those buggers don't depreciate much at all... given the low depreciation, I thought it makes more economic sense than buying a cheaper alternative.

The ride is hard, especially with the run-flat tires. However, it is unbelievably so much fun to drive, and there aren't many potholes in CH. Sometimes I think it has way too much power too... have to be careful as I accelerate out of corners, steering wheel wants to pop out of my hands!

Mine is the only one I have seen with a sat-nav. Looks way cooler than the standard white kitchen clock in the center console. However, I don't use it much, and idrive is cranky, so I wouldn't advice on getting it. All standard BMW radio speakers are crap. Get an upgrade if possible.

Sunroof is good if you don't want cabrio. I test drove one with a sport button, mine doesn't have one, but I didn't really notice the difference.

Currently I am averaging about 7.8L/100, using it daily to drive into Zurich for work (non-highway).

Can't think of anything else... enjoy!

Re: the new mini cooper s

On the manual ones there have been problems with the clutch/flywheels needing to be replaced a lot, perhaps due to poor/design material? Flywheels have been in short supply as a result. Some dealers suggest poor driving caused it. Never had one myself. A friend's daughter was having problems with hers.

the new ones are supposed to have a new clutch design, thats what the advertising bumf says anyway.

The one we test drove had the bmw gps, my god what a load of rubbish! the idrive system makes very little sense (to me at least) and having a fairly large screen but without being a touch screen is just madness, I would snap that flimsy idrive joystick in anger the first time I used it, and thats before you see the price of it lol, I'll stick to my portable gps and ipod for in car entertainment.

exactly, the GPS came with my second hand cooper s. I would not have ordered it otherwise. Anyway, you can use any old aux cable to connect your ipod to the car radio.

The only upgrade that I did myseld is to put in a strip of clear silicon tape along the doors - they don't come with rubber damperners so if you open the door next to a wall or another car, scratches are inevitable.

Mini! Mini! Mini!!!

Yes. You need it!!

(Although have to agree with AbFab, the sport suspension is a bit hard. I'd get the Cooper without the sport suspension. But I'm not a boy and apparently boyz must have the S.)

Carry on.

Any car that has an S is worth getting. You don't want to be at the lights next to a car like yours and be the one without the S dammit.
