Isn't it believed (in the Kabbalah I think) that God also gives the remedy to the cause of the pain. Perhaps not the remedy that one may expect.

Also isn't it believe that you are only given what you can bear ?

I don't have any answers, only hope.

This guy is so amazingly inspirational - he has my utmost and total admiration. He can fight for what he wants to become, and has done so so wonderfully. You can't fight a wasting disease like the one which afflicts Bernard's friend - and very few walk away after pancreatic cancer.
If anybody can ever answer the question 'WHY'? Why her, why him, why them, and why not me, I'd love to know. But never ever tell me God makes some suffer the most terrible things so I can appreciate how lucky I am, please.

Sorry to hear about your friend Bertrand. At a retreat I went to once conversation turned to why bad things happen to good people. One of the girls there suggested what I thought was a nice way to view the world. She said that she believed that everyone chooses and plans everything about their own life before they were born. The unimaginative would pick a life of excess where every need was met, the braver put hardships in their own way to teach themselves lessons they feel they need to learn, or challenges they want to overcome.

I'm not the most spiritual of people but I did like that view.

I believe also we come on Earth to learn or to help and that we've got what we can deal with.

But it sometimes doesn't help.....

An interesting view. I sincerely believe that the terrible car crash I had as a youngster did serve me very well in some ways - taught me a lot of things, about myself and about others. The long fight to learn to walk again, get back to work, etc, etc, did help too. A friend of mine has battled with cancer for a few years recently, and won - she says the same, that it has taught her so much. A debilitating wasting disease or one of the extremely rapid one-way cancers may teach a lot more - but would you really choose this way to learn- and not even have the chance to put what you've learnt into 'practice'? I think most of us would say NO.

perhaps a teaching then.....

We are in a limited body, with limited comprehension of our existence so what can be seen as something absolutely horrible is perhaps just something else, seen from another "dimension"...

but we enter a more spiritual, esoterical or philosophical matter.... (which is by the way very interesting too.)

Perhaps, but you do what you can with what you've got, and giving up has never been an option.

I also think it can be a bit misplaced to put people who have suffered on a 'pedestal' as some sort of super-human...sometimes it's simply a case of having to deal with life, day by day and minute by minute, holding on by your fingernails...and with no guarantees of what tomorrow will bring...

I'm glad your friend is a really lovely person...my best friend has been through three near-death experiences as well as the loss of her child, and I don't think she'd ever presume to say it was 'for the better'...
