I've been thinking about this a lot - last week we learned that my husband has some eye complications due to retinal detachments. He's not yet 50 and relies on his eyes as he is an academic. Head always in a book or computer. Treatments carry risk, of course, but probably won't be life or career threatening. What made me angry is why does this happen to him? And why now? And what if I can't take care of him when he needs me after his treatments - there are some things he won't be able to do obviously for a short time (as I'm finishing chemotherapy). But it looks like we've figured out how to manage this.

But the truth is that random sh*t happens to us all. I guess some people go through life blithely without many cares. Do they feel happy? Lucky? Shallow? Who knows. Not much to be done with that.

I suppose challenges can either make you stronger, or make you angry and twisted. I guess the best thing to do is to try to make those challenges provide you with strength, and to turn sh*t into sunshine where you can. And, challenges give you an opportunity to solve problems. It's just that sometimes, you wish there weren't so many of them.

I think helping your friend is a good way to deal with your feelings of anger about her situation, and will help her too by doing something you'll both enjoy. I think nothing dispels anger better. And anger can be a really destructive emotion if left to fester. Good for you!

Each Soul's purpose differs from the next, I believe that we choose our paths in life, we choose our illnesses, our joys, our destinies, in order to learn, and grow as Souls.

It must be very difficult for you to watch your friend suffer, my heart goes out to you and her.

A good friend once told me (soon after the passing of my Mom), that as a Soul, pain and joy, are not negetive and positive, but emotions, vibrations, that are neither negative or positive.

Bertrand, I'm sure you can bring joy into her life, and help her to forget her pain, even if it may be for a moment. When she is alone, and in pain, she could draw on her memories of happiness to ease her suffering.

I don't think anyone, soul involved or not, chooses to have a debilitating and painful illness.

well, I'm no more angry. I'm just in the present moment. Just here for her if she needs.

She had a RMI scan last week, and it seems she will have to do surgery again.... (she will meet her neurologist soon)

which means months to recuperate....

At least she knows she has really good friends to support her, and two nice children.

Yes, I know, a few years ago, I would have scoffed at that statement too. After my Mom died, I did alot of searching, and that was one of the truths that I found. It actually gave me a sense of deep peace.

Arnold-Chiari Malformation

I will continue to post here the progress of my "action" so those uninterested can just put this thread on their ignore list

I've created a few blogs which were read by around 200 people (by now)

the Facebook I've created as now 4 members. Two of them have Chiari.

The blogs, this thread and facebook give a very good result on google if somebody were to do a search.



Now what I read on other US chiari forum/facebook is absolutely terrifying.... as most of the parents with chiari have children with chiari.

and my friend has two children....

Amazing, a new member of the group I've made on facebook, has a chiari 2 type (she's french and live in the french part of the Jura).

Her neurosurgeon is in Lyon, is specialized in Chiari and it could be possible he come sometimes in Geneva's hospital to operate. This is not sure and has to be confirmed, but that would be so great !!!!

State of my friend's getting worst, left arm and leg get weak and numb and this is absolutely a bad news.

I can't believe it. My friend saw a neurologist today and she (the neuro) told her she was just depressed

My God, where did she studied ? ? ? I see my friend's health getting down, she has now difficulty to use her right hand and her right leg and this stupid said it's just depression....

If you pray, I'd be very grateful if you could pray for my friend. Thanks.

Whereas the doctor could have sounded a bit unsympathetic, perhaps she was suggesting that if your friend is depressed, it doesn't help her condition. It could be a vicious circle; i.e. her condition makes her depressed and the depression exacerbates the condition.

Maybe she could find another doctor and see if he can help alleviate some of the symptoms of depression which might, in turn, help her underlying condition.

Thank but that's not what she told me about it.

She was said to be depressed for 20 years before they finally found she had a Chiari...... My friend's not depressed, she's a fighter.

Well, I don't know how to pray...She is not dependent on an opinion of one neurologist. If she had a specialist in GE, I would ask for the file and report from that neurologist and go to another one. Try CHUV, I have great experiences in Lausanne.

I have to agree with MC.. one of the great things about the Swiss medical system is that you are not locked into one doctor. I had a diagnosis , or treatment plan actually from one doc that I was not happy with.. I wound up "interviewing" three more docs before I settled.

Now.. MC.. as far as not knowing how to pray... *biting my tongue* nevermind.

We had to run through a couple of docs to find a good ped and opthalmologist, too, and when you do it, you really do find somebody super. Just don't settle for one if you aren't happy with him/her.

Update. My friend's going next week in Paris to meet a neurosurgeon.

and I sent a email to a radio show called "la ligne de coeur" (heart's (phone)line), where people can talk about their problems or about what make them happy.

Got an email back asking me to give them my phone number so they can call
me on a night, so I can talk about Chiari.....

My facebook group has now 7 people with 4 of them being Chiari Fighters (3 are from France)
