Duke beats Prince?

I have looked this up (not on EF though), but I don't quite get it... Can some one explain to this not very bright common person:

Is a Duke higher than a Prince? Why did Prince William become a Duke but then he will be a Prince again when his father becomes king....

Oh, and just so you know, if the right 60 people die then the UK (et al) will become part of Norway! Wouldn't that be fun?

Re: Duke beats Prince?

No (to answer your first question).

As for the rest, Bill's still a prince, he's just added a duchy to his other innumerable titles -- so now Katie's titled too. And I think you're slightly off track about the putative merger of UK and Norway -- there's a link between the royal families, but Betty and family don't own the UK, so there's no chance of incorporating Norway into the family firm (or vice versa).

Re: Duke beats Prince?

I think I'm right in stating that a Prince only obtains the Duke title once married. The only exception I can think of is Prince Charles was always the Duke of Cornwall, possibly as it goes hand-in-hand with the Prince of Wales title.

Why does she have to wait till granny dies? Diana had the title of princess given to her. Or was that only possible because Charles was already a duke?

I do know that the heir apparent to the thrown become the Prince(ss) of Wales and so Kate wont' be a princess until William becomes Prince of Wales.

So, back to my question: Is a duke a higher rank than a prince?

In a word (which would otherwise be too short anyway), no.

Re: Duke beats Prince?

It depends on which pack of Top Trumps you have.

Seriously, though, as far as I know (without research), some titles are inherited and some are awarded, by The Queen.

I believe his full title should be:

- Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. He still remains Prince, but as is traditionally customary on marriage, or with status in general (but not automatic), The Queen awards a Dukedom (territory to govern within the country - symbolic now, but in the past was actual). This also affords the new bride a title (Duchess of Cambridge), as again (I believe) she doesn't automatically become a Princess, but this title has to be bestowed upon her by The Queen.

What do you mean? King Harald V of Norway is 68*th in line to the British throne. So as I said, if the 68 people above him die....

(*sorry, I originally wrote 60 which is not correct)

I mean that if 67 people were to die, then Britain would have a Norwegian monarch. But the UK would not become part of Norway.

Britain had a German monarch not so very long ago ...

Ahhhh... OK! I did warn it was all very confusing so you need to speak slowly...

But then would it become the Kingdom of UK (etc, etc what ever it is now) & Norway? Would they not merge?

No, just as GB didn't merge with Germany (and the British monarch has never ruled Germany).

The British monarch is just a figurehead, I tells ya ... (this from an Australian republican).

They still have.

The original family name was Saxe-Coburg Gotha, but after (prior to/during?) WWI, King George V (same bloodline as current Royal Family) thought to change it to the English sounding "Windsor", due to the anti-Germanic feeling.
