Giant asteroid heading close to Earth

The rock, named YU 55, which is quarter of a mile across, will pass between our planet and the moon in November and will be visible with small telescopes.

Hopefully not visible with the human eye!

Was that made with a BBC Micro? It's quite hypnotic.

Re: Giant asteroid heading close to Earth

I think it will pass very close to the moon. Average distance to the moon is 384'403 Km, and closest the asteroid will come to us is 325'00 Km, which means it will be maybe 60'000 Km from the moon.

Geo-synchronous stationary Satellites broadcasting TV programmes are at 36'000 Km, so there will be good reception for Eastenders and Big Brother.

Re: Giant asteroid heading close to Earth

nice.... but it's a plane/flat projection, it gives the impression the asteroid had 2 chances to hit the moon. But i guess the trajectories never cross?

Looking at the trajectory it will miss the moon by around 230,000km.
