In the Durban area of Natal in SA is a suburb, bordered by an industrial area, a 6 lane freeway, and airport (since moved). That area had/has the highest incidence of Asthma and lung related diseases in the whole of Natal.

Out in the rural countrysides are children living in one room huts, with indoor wood fires and families who smoke indoors. The children from those areas do not have any of the "smoking related" diseases, even though their diets are restricted.

Interesting..... neh?
This may be more related to parasites than smoke. There is qute a substantial body of evidence to show that parasitic infection reduces the incidence of allergies and asthma, which is why the incidences of these are comparatively low in developing countries. It's all in the IgE

However, of my siblings, the one who has always been the best physical condition was born when my mother WAS a smoker!

Tom
Aaah right, thanks for that.
I wonder if governments can add that quote onto cigarette warning packets, just to balance it out.

Those pesky scaremongerers!!

Re: Smoking when pregnant

The doctor of my wife suggested she doesn't stop smoking all of a sudden during pregnancy but she should decrease a bit as quitting smoking during pregnancy can have implications on the child, our child was born so healthy without any problems at all.

Years ago I worked with a woman who smoked about 5 cigarettes a day throughout her pregnancy. One of our fellow colleagues and a good friend of ours stopped talking to her as she was really angry about this woman smoking while she was pregnant.
The other day, while visiting a friend of mine (who incidentally also smoked while she was pregnant), a family member of hers came over for a visit. She is around 7 months pregnant and is smoking too.

Did any of you smoke while you were pregnant or are smoking while you are pregnant? Do you feel it does not harm the baby at all? I'm just curious to know why women do this. Please understand that I am not judging anyone in any way (I've got a ton of planks/beams/motes etc. in my own eyes so have no fear..).

Re: Smoking when pregnant

Just found this thread now and wanted to add in a couple of bits.

A 2011 study from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that stillbirth was 23 per cent more common and birth defects were 13 per cent more common among mothers who lived with, or worked with, smokers.

The effects are actually comparable to those seen in a woman who smokes.

Re: Smoking when pregnant

I totally agree with not smoking during pregnacy. I've even heard of couples with a male smoker quitting a year before they even started trying to get pregnant. Good idea in my opinion--however I'm not a professional.

My ex however was a professional in this subject, and apparently, the shock and withdrawal of a heavy smoker quitting suddenly before/during a pregnancy could cause more risks towards the pregnancy and potential baby. This idea was supported at the hospital she worked at.

Again, I'm not defending it, just bringing up the relavance.
