Two steps forward...

A step or two back.

I have received a letter of recommendation from one of my old bosses (well, she was more the leader of our partner department, not my direct super) and she sent it in a format I can't read.

Being cheap (and / or broke, however you wish to interpret), I only have OpenOffice, the most recent info I see on opening files in that program are from 2005 ( ) saying that it can't be done. The file in question is .wps, from what I've read it's an old (old, old even?) format that is no longer in use.

Perhaps if I wait til my brain is working better I'll figure it out on my own but, well, it may be a bit of a wait in that case. (PS, to future potential employers, I swear, my brain DOES work quite well when I have something more to think about than whether I want steak or chicken for dinner tomorrow.)

Can someone give me some hints about how to open this? Thanks a million!

Re: Two steps forward...

Looks like these guys found a solution... The middle of the page of posts has the work-around. Also, this online file converter was recommended on a different website (it will convert it to doc or pdf apparently). I didn't try it out but maybe it would work as a first option.

HTH.

Re: Two steps forward...

Hi - I had this problem recently. I have Word for Mac on my computer and I'm not familiar with Open Office, but in Word you go to 'Open' then you have an option of 'enable all files'. This opens it but scrambles all the formatting so you have to tidy it up a bit before you re-save it as a .doc file. Sorry, I'm not super-techie either but your program might have a similar option. Hope it helps.

Re: Two steps forward...

Sorry, I'm sure the previous post covers it, but I made a mistake in mine. It should be "Enable' then select "recover text from any file".

Re: Two steps forward...

In this day and age, just ask her to send it in pdf format.

In my mind, it's 'safer' that way because most people don't have the skills or software to open and manipulate pdf files....and it's much easier to transfer it electronically with your CV (assuming it's a 'reference' type letter)...
