So it's agreed, we're all going over to Leni's place for a delicious, non-fattening meal at some point in the not too distant future?

"20% of people with type-two diabetes have the condition despite being a healthy weight" which still means 80% are not a healthy weight.

Adrian, you're wasting your time quoting facts.

Didn't you realise that on this forum, an argument is made totally invalid if you can show the small percentage that doesn't follow the rule.

i.e.

Smoking is okay because my Auntie Hilda lived to 162 and smoked 40 Woodbine a day.

Obesity is not a problem as some people have anorexia.

I heard of a man that suffered a heart attack whilst out for a run so exercise must be bad for you.

When I was young I could eat what I wanted and didn't get fat so it must be genetics.

The Swiss eat lots of cheese and aren't obese so I can eat KFC eight times a week.

Re: Fast fatty foods

My family is so healthy, we just eat dirt. It was actually my kid's idea! He was like,"Dad, why not cut out the middleman? It will increase our joy in our healthfulness!".

Go to the source. You can't trust all that germination and photosynthesis BS. Now don't get me wrong, we do indulge ourselves from time to time and eat animals (dirt-plant-meat, all that processing gives me the heebiejeebies so I just ignore it for the sake of a rare treat ). Not that we eat actual muscle, that would be ridiculous. The organs are so much better for you. My youngest one is particularly fond of the adrenal gland- chock full of Vitamin C .

Leni,

Did you used to be fat. Reformed smokers are always the toughest on the smokers. Were you a Fatty Mcfatfat when you were younger? Did the other kids pick on you?
No - have been more or less the same all my life.
Sorry. Boring.

Good job the BBC time stamp on the article is later than my post or it would have looked a bit like shameless plagiarism

Re: Fast fatty foods

I think it's the "blame the Yanks and their lifestyle that is creeping in" shortcut mindset that I object. People make their choices, sure, but just because things are not easily available here does not make it a healthy choice. Just that it is not available and pushed on you. People eat less, I agree. But lets quit putting lack of food hedonism and somewhat limited palate on a pedestal and sneering at people with weight problem, whatever caused it. I don't see that much of a difference, I do see people eating less, more salads, and way less meat or fatty things, since that is also a way to cut down cost of food which is high here.

Just coz somebody's kid goes crazy for an artichoke does not mean all kids love eating artichokes. Don't they give you unbearable gas? I had it once and that was it for me, hahaha...

God, I never thought I would listen to similar reasoning like decades ago when all I had around were frutarians, raw food eaters, save the planet activists, vegan armada, smelly bean sprouters (well that is probable out of question these days) and co.

I do think we all should think about healthy food. Giving kids water only, or raw veggies/fruit snacks for snacks (when as some poster said they do have the ocassional McDs themselves) is strange to me. I like food to be a lot more festive and crazy (and healthy, sure, nothing wrong with healthy). I do have friends who would "reward" their kids with a yoghurt, while they endulged themselves (but with an excuse "they were grown ups, they can eat whatever they want").

Edot, I meant the psych treatment for other things, not to treat obesity. I think obesity, if treated on all fronts (psych treatment included), with appropriate support, has a lot more chance for success. And mockery and high horse never helped anyone.

But I don't really think the US has a limited palate (palette?) by any means - I think the food choices in the shops are probably the same as they are in Europe. It's the choices made by the population which are important along with the quantity consumed.

Having travelled a bit in the US, I've seen good healthy options but, as others have mentioned, it's cheaper to go for the unhealthy option whereas here it's the other way round.

Large people make so many excuses that it is hilarious. Walkers crisps? Enjoy the video I posted on the other thread. Keep Switzerland healthy and clean.

Oh good. Now we're going to discuss cleanliness? I can't wait. (oh wait, troll).

MusicChick - ok, I get your point. Of course in general, I'd rather pay for psych or just a little time with the doc than expensive tests or procedures that don't work....

Portion size in the US is a real issue, too I think. Portion sizes here are just much more reasonable.

Yes, please don't blame the Yanks - someone on here may take offence.

Oh, and as my parents were beansprout-eating hippies, I take offence at them being called smelly. The cheek of it!! They weren't at all smelly and even if they were, it wasn't for lack of washing, but probably due to the unavailability of a good bio - deodorant in those days....
