Oh, and, that beached whale bit? Ugly, ugly, ugly. No call for that any more than for using nasty names to call people of different races, different religions, different sexual orientation or anything else that may make them different from you.
I am a bit paranoid about eating in public for exactly that reason, getting pitying looks for your food choices really does make you feel crap. And it definitely happens, even though I'm probably one of the better proportioned manatees going. Or whispering and pointing between friends. Ironically, they are often not what you'd call the epitome of fitness and health themselves, the dreaded "skinny fat" is a sure sign of last having exercised at birth.

Ah, a definite advantage of being a man. Once you have a kid you just don't really give a ***k about folks looking at you .

And it's one of the few advantages of being old too. Let's face it, they're a bit thin on the ground!
People can say and think what they like about me. It doesn't even register.
I do try to look something approaching human though, and I've still got all my teeth.......which helps. I don't yet have to lap from the bowl.

LOL reminds of the time when I was tending bar as a student (must have been in the last millenium) and there was this big woman who always ordered banana daiquiry but without cream, and I never told her how many calories she was taking in from the drink itself.

Re: Fast fatty foods

Some interesting responses here.

Didn't exactly mention the 'whale' word - wouldn't dare - far too non-PC.

Yes, there is : 1) Too much cr@p available to people today
2) People should really start taking responsibility for their health.
And that doesn't necessarily mean being skinny.

Heart disease, strokes in young people and type 2 diabetes is on the rise. Look around and ask yourself why.

Some people eat too much
Some people don't exercise enough
Some both...

...but in there you have to include:
- a desire not to change (i.e. I'm happy with the way I am)
- a life-time of habits
- physiological changes/adaptations
- psychological urges/needs
- medical conditions (that lead to obesity, rather than co-morbidities of obesity)

If it was as simple as saying "Oi fatty - stop scoffing yourself" and "HTFU, exercise more and eat less" then it wouldn't be a problem. Would it?

It's akin to saying all women who don't breast feed have failed or who had a c-section are too posh to push. Life just isn't that simple.

Very true.

I have been told (generally by the entire female sample set who care to comment on it) that I'm physically very unattractive.
I have no intentions of changing my eating or exercising habits, and the medical profession seems to claim that I'm perfectly healthy, so life goes on and more 'unhealthy' food for me!!

Re: Fast fatty foods

I am kinda split on this. Sure menus suck, but it sucks more since there is 6 things to chose from usually. 4 waste of money and not very edible, 2 ok ish. I think in a country where it is so pricey to eat out, where the choice is poor, where people are in fact so fit (and stingy to pay for a meal out), I wouldn't worry too much about the health factor of food you eat out. Plus, after a few years, you learn about the better places with more healthy choices, and you stick to them (it ). Manora is consistently nice and healthy, albeit not cheap for what one gets. There surely are ok places, but it's far, either in LS or GE. Restos are not the thing I would rate high here, but on the other hand the ingredients one can buy to cook at home are fab. You can't have it all. Eat less, be healthy, like most of the locals.

And save the eating out for home, then it's bliss. Something to look forward.

You've never worked in an obesity clinic, have you?

(Hint: it rarely does, and usually makes things worse. Ever heard of comfort eating?)

The fit people look at the fat people's food choices and say, "Can you believe s/he is eating that?"
The fat people look at the smokers and say, "Oooh, look, they are the ones with the bigger health problems, and they stink!"
The smokers look at the ones who drink too much and say, "Well, at least I won't possibly kill someone else when I drive home tonight, and my liver is good!"
The drinkers look at the drug-users and say, "Well, at least alcohol is legal!"

It is all tiresome finger-pointing.

Maybe we should all refrain from judgment. It is actually much easier to address one's own vices rather than the stranger's at the next table.

Agreed. Very good judgement
