Yeah, I could have some butter shortbreads. Aaaaah.
I wonder what would people think watching me eat it, probably nothing. But if I happened to have 30kilos extra, according to some in this threads, I would be in for some serious stereotyping about my personality. Evil evil evil.

Not everbody does mental shortcuts. I know very few people who actually judge others based on how many kilos they have to carry. Pretty lucky person I am, huh...
There'll always be miserable haters, if your weight is fine they will find something else to badmouth you. One's lucky if snide comments roll off you like water off a duck's back.

OK.

Anyone heard of the "Thought Police"? All unorthodox opinions are considered evil: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought_Police

Or am I not allowed to say that?
You can write what you want... so can everyone else. You judge others, but don't want to be judged yourself. If you don't like it and that's the best "defence" you can come up with, then you might want to reconsider your position.

Yeah, but with the amount you eat, I reckon you've picked up a tape worm or two when you were last in China...

I'd agree with most of what was written. But if it were true then some of the reasons why Switzerland doesn't have the obesity levels of other Western countries are clear:

A scarcity of junk food take-aways selling the kind of obesity causing junk that can be consumed in large quantities.
A lack of interest in stupid slimming diets.
Family meals.
Smaller portions at restaurants.
Cooking proper meals at home.

etc etc etc

I truly cannot understand all the people on this forum who cry out for a North American food culture here with their KFCs and In and Outs etc etc/

I don't want that. Can't people see the problems it causes?

Re: Fast fatty foods

It is not the food that cause the problem, it is the person who can't control himself with it.

A KFC once in a while won't hurt you, if you eat it every week, every day, you'll see bad results on your body.

To have it available is to give someone's option to go and eat it. Those restaurants are not responsable of obesity, people are responsable of obesity.

I think we can all see that it doesn't work like that in practice in the majority of people who frequent these sort of places.

Wrong sort of food, wrong sort of dining experience (fast, rushed, no dignity, no respect for food).

True---but obviously (as probably mentioned many times before) your genes and body type plays a role.

Before I came to Switzerland, I ate KFC at least once a week, as well as the whole fast food circuit. Never really put on weight---and that's all I was looking for. Only when I came to Switzerland I started packing on the pounds (still embarrassingly skinny though)

You get confused again..... It is not Americans being too fat to see their own tapeworms.... It is British not being able to see their tiny penis

Really? How cool. So if I'm not careful it'll be like the Alien films where a smaller mouth pops out of mine to grab the food off my chopsticks. That woud impress people at dinner parties.

Imagine if we were like tapeworms then; instead of getting fatter humans were now just skinny and 5 metres tall. We'd need to keep building new houses.

I think we all know by now that this is just an excuse. As many studies have shown.

You eat more than your body needs - you put on weight. And, the best way to do this is to eat junk food full of sugars and fats.

I don't know your age but as you get older, your metabolism slows and when you were younger, you may have played more sport which keeps your metabolism high.

KFC once a week is too much. So now you know

Definitely going to have to disagree here. I lived with my ex for the better part of a decade. She watched what she ate, worked in in high pace medical field, exercised and did sport constantly, and still put on a few pound with time.
I spent the entire time lying down in front of the computer or the TV eating fast food and junk food and obviously not sport, and I've still kept my body fat percentage in the single digits (although it might break 10 in my later 30s).

As you said, your body has needs, and metabolism changes, these are both dependant on your body type and genetics, as I mentioned.

And age - it's the same for everyone. As you've said yourself - now you're older you're putting on weight.

They've done studies (that would agree with my own observations) that overweight people eat more than they say they do and thin people actually eat less.
(I'm talking about total food intake which includes snacks (which some people choose to ignore when they discuss how much they eat).

Genetics and body type may play a minor role but it doesn't explain the western world obesity explosion but the factors that I mentioned would. *

*However, if you think that Darwin was a fraud and you believe that God created the world in six days then perhaps you also believe that we as a race, have evolved dramatically in the last twenty years which is why are body types and genetic make-up have changed so much.

Personally, I don't subscribe to this view but with your reasoning, I appreciate that you may.

Darwin didn't know about epigenetics.

Re: Fast fatty foods

What is the cause of obesity?

Simple - wealth.

You need a longer answer?

Throughout history food has been relatively expensive, head back to ancient Greece and you'll find meat and fish was incredibly expensive. What this meant was that over time obesity was linked to wealth and vice versa. To be seen as fat was a jolly good thing.

Post-war (WW2) the relative cost of food began to plummet to a point where cost wasn't a barrier to gluttony. By driving down the cost of food (and drink) to affordable lows everyone was able to eat - too much.

Genetically we are designed to eat when we can - we aren't much difference on that front from any other animal.

So here we sit in 2011, where food is abundant, cheap - with the latter often being due to mass production of man altered product. The cost of food now overrides the importance of food - 2 cheeseburgers for $1 will sell more than an organic mixed salad for $12.

We spent 2 weeks in the US recently - and not once did we eat in a chain - we bought great coffee from local coffee houses (which wiped the floor in terms of quality with the Seattle behemoth); we ate fried fish and burgers at bars that have won awards for their food; we ate at "normal" restaurants (by Swiss standards) where mains were $20 - and the food outstanding.

A section of society will always value the flavour, quality, nutrition and design of food far above the cost - but unfortunately the majority don't. The majority live by the purchasing power of the cash in their pockets - why spend $20 on a meal - when one can be bought for $5?
