In light of this: http://www.mobiledia.com/news/90603.html
Seems to be a new trend
I find some of the American Apparel ads on Huffington Post very distrubing. One shows a girl planking on what seems like the balustrade of a balcony

Anyway, probably funny at the time.

This whole planking thing is not new. Back in the day we used to call it naps, but we didnt take photos so we could keep it core. Like all good things mainstream comes along and ruins it. |

Since that idiot died. 20 minutes online have been reporting about it and showing photos of the sheep now doing it here. http://www.20min.ch/sommerspezial/st...ifung-21454045
Firstly it must be one of the most stupidest things ever.
And secondly and my main point is it shows how strong the media can encourage people to do things. 20 min are giving it a cult status and calling it a trend. Now if one of the sheep here is a stupid as the idiot in Australia and gets himself killed the same media will be discussing about how dangerous it is and banning it without reflecting on their whole role in it.
It was the same with happy slapping or whatever it is called. The media felt the need to report regularly about scumbags in the States and Britain filming themselves while beating up some poor guy. Then they act all worried about this trend spreading here. Well if you stop giving attention to every douchebag in the world who does it and hence giving the doucebags here ideas would certainly help.

Wow. You must be a very unhappy and miserable person to call some people who are just trying to have a bit of fun "douchebags". I think we all know who the douche here is. No I have not planked, but it doesnt make me mad that others are doing it. Someone needs to go get laid.

I plank regularly, naturally I call it lying down. I do it in parks, on benches, basically wherever I can when I am tired and not inconveniencing others. I didn't know that it was a fad. I have never don it in supermarkets as I never get drunk and don't want to get kicked. I have done it on a hospital floor- but I was pretty sick.
Anyway the plonker plankers have moved onto rafting, that's where you tie a few planks together. I have done it with a baby tied to me in a snugly. I don't think that makes me a rafter.
I don't do it on the railings of high balconies, as depicted in the American Apparel ad. I so hope that they have reconsidered that ad.

Now I have this irresistible urge to go and lie on the BLS tracks for a Kodak moment | | | | | Yeah and no right minded person would think about lying down on the edge of a balcony yet it cost someone their life. To be fair though I'm sure he's not the only one to have done it. He's just the unlucky one who happened to fall.
Anyway my rant wasn't towards planking directly. It's more towards the sheep who do whatever the TV or papers say is cool. I'm sure had you asked most of those people who posted photos to lie down and you'll take a photo of them cause it'll be a laugh, they would have told you to wise up. Cause the papers said it's cool and fun and tons of other people are doing it, they've now decided to. I just find the sheep mentality annoying.
And regarding 20 minutes, I find it very bad taste that a day after reporting someone died by overdoing it, they are doing their best to encourage people to send in their photos. Currently there are 4 different articles motivating people to plank on their front page. This a couple of days after writing comments from reports in Australia who said it was inevitable that some one would take it too far and get themselves killed. I doubt though that the paper will say sorry we screwed up, offer an apology and do some self-reflection should someone get killed here by doing the same.
If it was just a general report about a new trend I'd have no problem about it but starting this advertising campaign on the back of a kid dying is in my opinion bad taste and wrong.

There is a wide range of plonkers- age, ex, race. It is non- discriminatory practice and of course there are always those who take it to an extreme (they should have a thought for the emergency services who have to clean up the mess) But mostly it is just silly harmless fun. http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/the-60-best-planks |

I think that we should publicly encourage this - with luck the darwin affect will kick in and the world will be a better place.
Just a shame the emergency services have to get called out more, but still - oh I once heard about a planker who planked(?) on a moving Fire engine.......
I plank
You plank
He/She/It planks
They are plankers
