What do you think of the men behind the women?

We all know that it takes a very strong and supportive woman to enable a man to rise the ranks in the business or political world.

That old "joke" where Hillary Clinton and Bill meet up with one of her ex boyfriends, and he says "hey, if you married him, you would have been the wife of a *insert less prestigious role than US president, if you can find one, here*.
And she says- "No - then he would have been president"...

But, looking through pictures in last weekends paper, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf is seen with her husband Christoph.
How hard did Christoph have to work to get her there?
What did he have to sacrifice?
Certainly it is in few mens' psyche to allow a woman to outshine them?

Or maybe I just hang out with the wrong people?

Let the house-husbands wipe their hands on the apron-strings and have a moment in the limelight.
Your thoughts on the men behind the women - if you have even ever considered them..

Dennis Thatcher. He gave up his own oil company to be the man behind the woman.

I think the question would nt arise because of the type of woman that I chose to marry. It takes a certain je ne sais whatnot to take such a decision and I personally couldnt do that.

Re: What do you think of the men behind the women?

Having said that and thought about it some more, there are two types of decision that can be taken. The Dennis Thatcher decision was taken AFTER he had proven himself in business and made his fortune, the other type of decision is to sacrifice the potential career. If Mrs G came along in 5 years and asked me to give up my work and to support her in her career, I would probably do it.

In one word, sissys.

But practically speaking, marry me and I will help you get the best career in the business and political world and support you strongly all the way.

Only if you will give me enough pocket money and let me drive a 4 wheel drive around and have expensive lunches in restaurants with my other fellow Desperate House-husbands.

At any given time you call me a useless bum or anything like that, then thats it, I'll be getting a younger girlfriend.

Probably won`t get any response from men that have done that as they are too busy looking after the kids and washing etc etc

Re: What do you think of the men behind the women?

When I was offered a job here, my husband left his job and sold his house to come with me. I told him that if he did not want to move I would accept it and stay, he is the most important person in my life and my priority is being together.
He said he did not mind moving and so we did, he found a job he liked 2 months after and we are doing great. He told me that I was more ambitious than him and if there was one person in the couple to have a career it would be me (his words not mine), I love him even more for doing such a selfless act, just because of love .... boo hoo

Re: What do you think of the men behind the women?

Writer Marian Keyes (one of the richest women of Ireland) has one, she describes it pretty well here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/sep/26/gender.uk

She basically says that she is fine, husband is fine, but everybody else seems to have a problem:

"Recently a (female) journalist described Tony as the perfect man because he has so graciously assumed the supportive role in our set-up. I can't deny that I'm deeply grateful and full of admiration for him but - and all due respect to him - women have been doing this sort of thing forever."

"But what is interesting is that women aren't always comfortable with his lowly status. Female journalists often ask Tony what he "does" and he answers proudly, "dogsbody". And, lo and behold, when the piece comes out he is described not as my "dogsbody" or even my "colleague", but as my "manager". "

Should I just say that this whole idea of man behind woman didn't turn out that great for John Lennon??

Re: What do you think of the men behind the women?

Personally I think it is a weak man who cannot stay in the shadows and let his wife/partner (even boyfriend in these modern days) take the glory.

Weak men have to prove themselves to be 'stronger' whereas a stronge man doesn't need to prove anything. Just because a man stays at home and looks after the kids, cooks, cleans etc doesn't mean he dissolves into nothing.

People who look on in disbelief are the ones with a problem and have issues with their own persona. Weak men live other peoples lives whereas a strong man furrows with his own plough. Let's all be ants and get the 7:08 train to the office...

There is a slight difference between being a supportive and/or househusband and being a kept man.

Tell me about it(!) Problem is, a lot of men forget that that also goes with the package when they decide to be Stay-at-home parents.

At one stage in New Zealand, the Prime Minster, the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker of the House and the head of Telecom - the largest listed company in NZ, were all women. Guess how many had kids..
And only 1 was married..
