Has anyone been to Haiti recently?

I may have to go to Haiti very soon, presumably to Port au Prince but yet to be confirmed, for about 15 - 20 days. I have done my search on the Net for various tips, especially related to safety, security and food etc. At the end of it all, I think the information available is inconsistent, conflicting and hence confusing.

It would be much more authentic and reassuring to hear from anyone who has been there recently.

I am posting this here. If this is not the right place, please move this to a more appropriate area.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Has anyone been to Haiti recently?

I am not sure what your reason is, travelling? Tourism?

Coincidentally, I have just listened to a program on the radio, talking in great details about humanitarian network there, and it seemed to me things only function in the cities. The infrastructure is dead elsewhere. The worst is: healthcare, non existing schools, etc. I am curious myself although I am not planning to go. This is the organisation the program was about.

Sorry if this is not the info you need, somebody will hopefully chime in.

Thanks for noticing this and replying. I am going there on work. A short assignment. I am waiting for the folks who are making arrangements for me to decide which way I need to go. In any case it seems like a long 28-30 hr journey with an overnight stop either in New York or Miami.

My concern is safety, security and food in that order. Some sites speak about serious crime, robbing, kidnappings etc. mainly because there is nothing there for the locals to earn a livelihood.

I do hope someone chimes in as you have said.

Thanks again. I will do that for sure. In fact I tried calling them today. They only work Tue-Thur and only in the afternoon for a few hours. I tried calling their Embassy in Paris (not at all helpful), their Embassy in Washington DC (very rude but at least got the visa info that I wanted) and their permanent commission for UN in Geneva (helpful and gave the info about visa, although they didn't have to)
