I use the computer for englishforums.ch, youtube (there's a tv series that my son watches in spanish there "Pocoyo"), kino.to for spanish disney movies, skype or messenger, All office programs, etc. No hard gaming, no heavy uploading, and i would like to have a computer that last me for the long run, i cant afford to buy me one every couple of years.
I will definitely go for a mac. Either iMac(desktop) or Macbook(laptop) will fit your needs. A little more expensive but you get what you pay for. Now it is a good idea for wait until the new mac OS Lion comes out in summer so you will get the new OS for free. It is also suggested to buy the "Applecare" so that the warranty lasts for three years.

If you want something to last, get a mac (ibm was good too but their new owner might be cutting corners).

If you only need to re-install windows do as the others have said.

If you want to recover the data... well, there is nothing special. Just reinstall windows on top of the old one. No data is erased during the install, it is just the old files that get rewritten. All your folders outside windows will still be there after the installation.

Get an external drive to do backups. It's very very cheap now and you can just wipe clean the computer when problems arise.
You have better tech support here for free than perhaps anywhere else in Switzerland.

Ignore the irrelevant MAC FANBOY STUFF/hardware addiction, until you have bought at least one external backup drive and have spare cash. Secure your pictures, then you can use/fix you computer without stress or fear!

For now, open a gmail account, attach all your best photos of the kids, Gmail them to your best friend/relative that also uses Gmail. Upload the pics to snapfish or similar, at least you can always buy low res copies for the foreseeable future. As long as you keep using Gmail, the pics should stay in your sent folder.

A bootable USB stick with Ubuntu Live on it (20chf?) would let you put all your Photos in Gmail if your computer won't boot windows at the moment.

Later on, the most I would spend is 75chf for an external Harddrive (eg Western Digital Elements Desktop, 3.5", 1.5TB, USB2.0 from Digitec).

If i understood correct I go to the HW store and ask for a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu Live and could also buy the external harddrive. conect them both to the lap and the usb will alow me to save the photos to the external harddrive? If the prices are around what you said i could afford both at the moment.
Thanks for the guidance!

I can definitely bring it to oerlikon . sending pm.

..and regarding the groan i picture the scenario that maybe he sells sw and you spoiled some sales with your clever option..

Why? I bought my macbook 5 years ago and I am still using it more than 10 hours a day.

You can find the same quality in some fujitsu and toshiba but without knowing them is difficult to tell.

Just for the record, I am no fanboy. I have several machines, some of them with different flavors of linux. I just believe you should get what works better for you.

Coco, I am indeed a spanish speaker and know what terco means. Funny enough the name didn't come from 'stubborn' but something else. Since I am stubborn enough I decided to stick with that name.

Well, if you really want a backup there are ways to do it but you would need somebody to give you a hand. You would have to open your pc, extract the disk and attach it to a different computer. It is much easier than it sounds but the first time is a bit daunting. I even have this little gadget that let's you connect internal disks through usb, it is quite useful for this kind of thing.

Another trick is to find out if your pc can be turned into an external drive by itself. Then you just connect it to another pc and do the transfer.

I can help you with it if you pass by Geneva ... just let me know.

I bought a G4 Mac Mini for 500chf in Manor in 2005, over clocked it, upped the ram, hacked on a 3.5" hdd (trickier than it looks), and still run it 24x7 as a web server/media PC/File server.

I might have difficulty saying the same. Sorry if it caused offense.

My point though was that the OP may well have the perfect laptop for what she needs already, and the big issue is perhaps saving those baby pictures.

it won't set any speed records but for what you say you need it will be fine.

You can pick up windows for around 100chf, or find a serial number easily enough off the net

or even go into a shop, turn over a laptop, and copy the serial number from the sticker on the bottom
Ahem... I really hope you're not advocating being a pirate in a public forum.. lol

Re: Is this a good computer?

Great to hear that. Thanks to BB2.

I have an external Western Digital hard drive (1.5 TB) die off with SMART errors. Thanks to ddrescue, I have only lost 818KB of the image, after letting it run imaging to a Samsung for the last 20 hours. Just finished a few minutes ago.

Drive failures seem to be a fact of life these days.

I'm looking for a new computer, my laptop stoped working and it only needs to install windows again, but the code that was in a sticker under the laptop is now unreadable and i think the technical help plus the buying the new windows will cost me the same than this one http://orderservice.mediamarkt.ch/an...gb-20-ati4-270 .

The question is, will it work for me?? Do you know a cheaper pc or laptop that could fit me?
I use the computer for englishforums.ch, youtube (there's a tv series that my son watches in spanish there "Pocoyo"), kino.to for spanish disney movies, skype or messenger, All office programs, etc. No hard gaming, no heavy uploading, and i would like to have a computer that last me for the long run, i cant afford to buy me one every couple of years.

Any info is valuable, Thanks in advance for taking the time of reading. Have a wonderful day!
I am only endorsing iMac.
